Can You Leave A Humidifier On All Night?

Can you leave a humidifier on all night? Some may say that this is unsafe or unnecessary, but the truth is that leaving it on all night is one of the best ways to get the most out of your humidifier!

The short answer is yes, running a humidifier all night is both ok and can be beneficial to both your health and comfort, too. However, you don’t want the humidity to go over a comfortable level.

I’ll explain more as we go along.

Is sleeping with a humidifier bad?

Not really “bad”, but you don’t want to leave a humidifier running full blast all night if it’s going to bring the humidity above a good level (around 60% and below is usually comfortable). You could end up having problems sleeping (even sweating!) and then struggling to get the rest you need.

Once the humidity is too high it’s hard to bring it back down aside from opening a window in winter or using your air conditioner.

Is it ok to close the door with a humidifier running all night?

Yes, in fact, it’s preferred as humidifiers will have an easier time raising the humidity (and comfort level) in a closed room.

Because larger spaces require even more moisture, meaning it takes a proportionately longer time according to how large the space is. The smaller the air space in a closed room will allow it to work much more efficiently and raise the humidity faster.

If you’re wanting to raise the humidity in larger spaces you’ll need to consider using more than one or buy a higher output model.

What do humidifiers do?

what do humidifiers do

A humidifier adds moisture to the air by changing liquid water into a fine mist that is released into the air.

The most common, and most effective, models use power from a standard electrical outlet to run. You can also find others that are evaporative, meaning they simply let the water slowly evaporate to do the same thing (although much less quickly).

The electronics inside use electrical current to drive a vaporizer element. The vaporizer changes the liquid form of water into a fine mist that rises through an exit passageway and out a nozzle into the room’s air.

There are two main types of electrical humidifiers:

  • Warm Mist Humidifiers – These humidifiers use heat to create a warmer, more moist air quality which has a range of benefits including aiding your natural breathing and helping to prevent the build-up of germs and bacteria in the air.
  • Cold Mist Humidifiers – These units produce air that is not heated, so the air remains cool or around room temperature making them safer for homes that have small children.

Preparation

Before leaving your humidifier on for a long period always do the following:

  • Be sure the tank has been well-maintained (the tank was cleaned recently) and there are no algae or dark spots due to stagnant water and long use without cleaning.
  • Make sure the tank is fully filled in order to get the maximum use (hours) out of it.
  • For best results in terms of time, set it to a lower output setting. This can increase the use time by as much as twice for some models!

Additionally, be sure to place it in a good place away from wooden furniture or surfaces. Even better, a great idea is to place a cover or tray underneath to prevent water droplets from getting on nearby surfaces.

The helpful benefits of using a humidifier

benefits of using a humidifier

Knowing that you can leave your humidifier on at night is great, but what are the benefits of doing this?

1. Improved Sleep Quality

Using a humidifier helps you to sleep more comfortably by moistening the air which can help prevent snoring, as well as ease sore throats and dry mouths.

Bedrooms that use a humidifier will help to reduce the worsening of a dry throat and can help your sinuses to relax due to the warm and moist air you will breathe.

All of this can help relax you and improve your sleep quality dramatically.

2. Avoid Morning Voice / Mucus Build Up

When we sleep our throats can become dry and the body will try to produce mucus to protect our sensitive cells from being damaged.

Using a humidifier while you sleep will massively reduce the dryness in your throat so that your body doesn’t use as much mucus to help protect your throat.

As a result, you will wake up with a much clearer throat and far less mucus buildup.

3. Skincare benefits

One of the main times of day our skin dries out is at night, especially in dry environments. Many skincare products and night creams claim to be able to prevent this drying out overnight, but they’re costly and run out often. Some just don’t work all that well.

It’s a little-known fact that using a humidifier will help keep your skin moist and can prevent sagging, flaking, dullness, wrinkling, and general dryness, all of which can be traced back to dry air sucking moisture directly out of your skin.

A humidifier makes it far less likely for you to get dry skin during the night, helping your skin to remain plump, firm, and well-hydrated even while you sleep.

This can reduce bags under the eyes and other skincare concerns, and unlike creams and lotions, a humidifier will last far longer.

4. Healthier Plants

While not all plants will benefit from this, if you’re someone with a lot of houseplants that need regular maintenance and watering, humid air can really help your plants to stay healthy and stable.

Naturally, the more moist the air is the less likely your plants are to dry out and the more easily they will be able to absorb and retain water.

5. Prevent Nose Bleeds and Sinus Discomfort

As someone who suffers from nosebleeds quite frequently, I find that using a humidifier at night helps to prevent soreness and discomfort in my nasal passage, and have even noticed a reduction in the frequency of my nose bleeds.

This is because much like skin cells, the cells in the nose will be healthier and more resilient when they aren’t dry and flaky. Breathing in humidified air helps to keep them from drying out and becoming weak.

6. Protect your Wooden Furniture

If you’re someone with a lot of wooden walls or furniture, you’ll be well aware of the dangers dry rot can cause. It can disintegrate beloved antiques, family heirlooms, and even the very floorboards beneath your feet.

Dry rot thrives in warm dry environments, causing wooden objects to literally crumble before your eyes in a matter of weeks.

A humidifier helps to fight dry rot by keeping the air in your home and your furniture much more moist, which in turn can help protect your property from dry rot and help prevent its spread.

If you have concerns about this, however, it’s also a good idea to seek professional assistance as the damage this can cause can quickly build up.

7. Fight Off Germs and Bacteria

Bacteria and germs hate heat and will do what they can to avoid getting too hot. If they’re confronted with a change in temperature, germs will often go dormant or die off completely.

If you’re someone concerned about cleanliness and sterilization that’s another positive thing to bear in mind.

The warmth that humidifiers create can make certain germs far less likely to propagate and this can in turn help prevent infections and other illnesses which will help you lead a healthier, happier lifestyle.
