What is “white noise”?

White noise graph image example

Shown: A graph showing the sonic frequency range of white noise versus what your ears can hear. “White noise” is a scientific term that refers to what happens when we hear sound across the audio spectrum at one consistent volume. It has other scientific uses, but for most of us it’s the ability to drown out – or “mask” – any unwanted sounds that make it very helpful.

White noise is a really interesting topic but sometimes is misunderstood.

White noise is the term used to describe sound production that covers the entire audio spectrum our ears can hear (around 20Hz to 20 Kilohertz or so).

Because it can cover so many sound frequencies found in the real world (like people talking and bathroom sounds) it’s useful for blocking sounds we don’t like.

Note: “White noise” is a term occasionally used interchangeably when talking about brown noise or pink noise too even though they’re not exactly the same.

These terms refer to slightly different sound patterns that are sometimes available with white noise machines. During this post I’ll refer to the standard label of white noise to avoid any confusion.

White noise machine benefits

Image of a white noise machine on bathroom counter

Pick up a white or tan sound (white noise) machine and you’ll have a good match for most bathroom interiors.

Trust when I say I understand how it can feel when you’re in the bathroom and it’s not the most comfortable situation. Many times I wish I had a handy way to guard my privacy and avoid any potential embarrassment that comes from the normal bathroom habits we all have.

Sound machines are used in a very wide range of circumstances to block sounds, avoid distractions, and create a calm, focused, and relaxed environment.

You’ll generally find white noise used in the following ways:

  • In businesses
  • Small study rooms
  • Physical or behavioral therapist offices
  • Helping babies sleep
  • Relieving stress
  • Blocking outdoor noise at work
  • Improving your mood
  • Increasing focus & concentration
  • For improving productivity & work quality
  • Bathroom privacy & a relaxing restroom environment

They’re also especially great for traveling. Because most are compact they fit into baggage easily. Some can work from battery power or a USB phone charger as well.

Our brains are naturally distracted by sound. It can grab our attention and not let go, causing us to lose focus and get stressed out quickly. Unless we’re expecting outside sounds – like attending a sporting event – when they are unwanted it can really have a negative impact on our well-being.

While electric fans like box fans are one option for making white noise, they’re not efficient and definitely aren’t portable. The best solution that’s practical and affordable is to use a sound machine.

Put them where they’re more effective

To get the most out of your new white noise machine (whether it’s one or several you’ve bought) keep placement in mind. Location is important!

Although you might think it’s a good idea, in truth, it’s not best to put one really close to where you’ll spend the most time like your couch, desk, or bed.

Instead, it’s often best to put them several feet away to mask noise more effectively as they’ll cover more area and block incoming sounds throughout the room. Additionally, in cases where you’ve got a larger room or more difficult sounds to block you can use more than one.

How does a white noise machine work?

How to block outside sounds white noise diagram

White noise machines produce a range of sound across all the frequencies that our ears can detect. By doing so, these devices “mask” (cover), and therefore block, unwanted noises that bother us.

Need a low-cost and practical way to prevent people from hearing unwanted noise from outside the bathroom? Sound machines are an effective option.

As long as the volume of any inside or outside sound is equal to or less than the volume of noise made by the machine it can and go unnoticed.

With a few exceptions, nearly all nearby sounds with low or moderate volume – traffic, conversations, coworkers – all the frequencies that we can hear can be blocked.

It’s all about your brain (and ears too)

Our brains can’t process a lot of audio information at once. We’ve all been in situations where everyone’s talking at the same and yet and no one is really “heard” because the voices seem to drown each other out.

That’s the principle behind how sound machines work: The frequencies we can hear are masked by white noise, whether it’s outside traffic, the radio or TV, or your neighbor’s conversation in a nearby apartment.

Sound machines produce sound patterns by one of the methods I’ll describe in the next section.

As long as the unwanted sound volume isn’t louder than the sound produced by the machine our brains will only register what the white noise machine is generating.

The result is that the noise is covered up (also called masking) and your brain won’t detect the outside sounds anymore. They’re effectively blocked and it’s like they don’t exist at all!

How sound machines generate noise

Image of electromechanical vs electronic sound machines compared

Left: Electro-mechanical sound machines use an older design that physically moves air to create noise. Right: Electronic sound machines, also called “solid state” since they don’t use moving parts, create sound from digitally stored patterns, and use a loudspeaker.

When shopping, you’ll find to main categories to choose from.

1. Electromechanical devices

Electromechanical designs use an older type of noise generating technology. They’re simpler to use, too. Although less popular now they’re still widely used and a good choice for many people

This type uses an electric motor to drive a fan assembly, causing the blades to spin rapidly and generate white noise through airflow. Some allow for volume and sound tone adjustment as well.

Typically these have limited features but are extremely easy to use.

2. Electronic models

Electronic models use integrated circuit components to create noise patterns stored as a digital file much like musical MP3 files. Predetermined sounds are generated and adjustable volume control is standard.

An electronic white noise machine typically provides additional sounds like different fan settings or the sounds of nature.

Electronic vs electromechanical sound machines

Electromechanical vs electronic white noise machines comparison image

Electromechanical and electronic (“solid-state”) white noise machines both have advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other. Saying one is “best” isn’t always the case.

There are pros and cons to both. An electromechanical unit is both simple and reliable but will use more electricity. Because of the fans, they also have a more natural “whoosh” sound which an electronic unit doesn’t.

One disadvantage is that this type uses more electricity than electronic models and requires an outlet for power. Normally this type doesn’t offer a battery power or USB power feature.

Electronic sound machine advantages

Solid-state units offer a lot more features but aren’t as easy to run due to having more buttons & settings to learn and use. The artificial noise patterns are often very good (although the sound quality greatly depends on the design quality & parts used.)

The disadvantage is that they’re not for everyone. They’re not a good choice for the elderly or anyone who doesn’t want to deal with push buttons & more advanced features.

How to best use a white noise machine in a bathroom

White noise machine in bathroom clip art

Manufacturers recommend placing a noise machine not immediately next to your where you’ll be but several feet away. Optimally, you’ll place it in a place closer to where the noise enters the room. As it’s further away from you, you’re able to have the volume set higher than you would immediately next to you. In the case of bathrooms placing one near the doorway is often ideal.

The good news is that there are only a few steps to setting up a noise machine for optimal use. They’re generally very easy to use.

For best results, place it (or them) in a convenient place away from your bed at least several feet and higher off of the floor if possible.

This is helpful for 2 reasons:

  1. You’ll need to adjust the volume to block snoring sounds you’re hearing. If the machine is too close to your bed you’re much more likely to turn the volume down a lot which will affect its performance.
  2. If placed on the floor, sounds may potentially enter more easily than if placed on a desk or table above the floor. Consider where you actually hear sounds entering the room.

Setting up a noise machine only requires a few steps: adjust the volume as needed to a comfortable level that can block sounds and choose your preferred sound type or tone (if applicable) that works best for you.

Countertops, tables, or towel shelves are great locations for them. While you can use yours very close to your toilet if necessary, it’s not an ideal location.

Locating a noise machine a least 3 feet away is recommended and gives it the opportunity to cover more of the bathroom.

How many noise machines do I need?

How many white noise machines do I need bathroom clip art

Marpac, manufacturer of the popular Dohm Class white noise machine, recommends one machine for every 300 square feet. That’s about a 10 foot x 30 foot room for reference.

In some cases you might need to buy a 2nd one if you’re having especially worried about privacy & others hearing you.

For a small bathroom, one is usually fine. For larger bathrooms or if you’re dealing with especially loud sounds, 2 sound machines are recommended.

2 units can be placed in different locations to give better sound coverage as well as a bit more volume that one unit alone can.

White noise is an interesting, though sometimes misunderstood, topic.

Simply put, when a noise signal containing all the audio frequencies we can hear the name white noise is often used. Because it can cover so many sound frequencies found in the real world (like barking dogs) it’s useful for block sounds that cause us problems.

Noise vs everyday sounds

Unlike the everyday sounds you’re used to hearing like traffic, music, or conversations, a white noise machine covers the full range of sounds our ears hear. Most sounds we hear only occur in a limited portion of the range of human hearing.

White noise is different in when it’s around us we don’t notice the specific and distracting frequencies coming from other sound sources.

I’ve seen how effective sound machines are when bothersome sounds are coming from outside. Once the unwanted sounds are masked and blocked it makes a big difference! Everything is more relaxed, stress levels go down, and we can go back to our happy day or get back to tasks.

Different noise types & their names

The term “white noise” is sometimes used interchangeably with other noise patterns such as brown noise or pink noise. Names like “pink” or “brown” describe sound with a certain frequency response characteristic.

For example, brown noise has a lower sound volume in the upper-frequency ranges (which we often call “treble”, or “highs”). As a side benefit, some sound machines are capable of producing these types of noises like brown or pink noise as a feature.

Note: “White noise” is a term occasionally used interchangeably when talking about brown noise or pink noise too even though they’re not exactly the same.

These terms refer to slightly different sound patterns that are sometimes available with white noise machines. During this article I’ll refer to the standard label of white noise to avoid any confusion.

White noise machine benefits & use

Image of a white noise machine on desk

No need to let those noisy dogs ruin your day! White noise machines give you a simple tool for producing a calm environment at home. They’re also effortless to use and most are affordable for nearly everyone.

I know how hard it is to concentrate when you’re sitting at home just enjoying your free time and for the next few hours you can’t get a break from the neighbor’s dog barking. It’s enough to drive you crazy!

If you need relief from distracting & annoying sounds, a white noise machine can make all the difference. In fact, I use some myself (along with other products) and recommend them to friends, family, and coworkers.

White noise machines are very useful in many situations:

  • In businesses (offices, cubicle work areas, or near meeting rooms)
  • Small study rooms
  • Physical or behavioral therapist offices
  • Helping babies sleep
  • Relieving stress
  • Blocking outdoor noise at work
  • Improving your mood
  • Increasing focus & concentration
  • Improving productivity & work quality
  • To create a calm environment for pets

They’re also excellent for traveling for work or personal trips. They’re compact and easy to travel with as they fit into baggage easily. Some can work from battery power as well.

Incoming sound, especially when unexpected, draws our attention and can take our focus away from what’s important. Our nervous system becomes more active, our stress levels go up, and because we lose our focus we can’t concentrate or work, studying, or relaxing.

While you could use noise canceling earphones they’re expensive and not always practical. Besides, who wants to have to wear those at home?

Sound machines are much more affordable, easy to use, and practical.

How white noise machines work

Diagram showing how white noise blocks dog barking & other soundsThe smooth, soothing sound produced by a white noise machine “masks”, or covers up, outside like those from pets, people, and music from your neighbors. The result is that since your brain can no longer detect the bothersome sounds are present, they’re effectively blocked and eliminated.

White noise machines by generating sounds across the spectrum of human hearing to block out any unwanted noise. Because the white noise covers the full range of what our ears can hear, the other sound frequencies that you’d otherwise notice are effectively masked.

In other words, the white noise machine covers up the unwanted noises around you.

That’s a way to deal with the annoying sound of dogs barking, birds chirping, and a variety of irritating sources.

As long as the volume of the outside sound isn’t louder than the white noise machine volume you won’t notice them.

It’s all about your brain (and ears, too)

The science behind works because our brains can’t process too much audio information at once.

For example, when a TV is on, and someone’s trying to talk to you, and there’s a radio blaring in the background you can’t really focus and pick out any one sound source.

Your brain blends them together and it’s almost impossible to hear a single sound individually very well. That’s because the sound frequencies combine as your hearing receives them.

The result is that since white noise covers the entire range of human hearing outside sounds mix with it and won’t be noticed.

In other words, it’s impossible for your brain to hear noises that the white noise machine can cover. They’re effectively blocked & eliminated.

How sound machines generate noise

Image of electromechanical vs electronic sound machines compared

Left: Electromechanical sound machines are an older design that physically move air to create the noise. Right: Electronic sound machines, also called “solid state” since they don’t use moving parts, create sound from digitally stored patterns, and use a loudspeaker.

White noise machines normally fall into one of 2 categories for how they produce sound.

1. Electromechanical devices

Based on the original sound machine design these are still sold and are still popular today. They use an electric motor and compact fan assembly. As the fan blades spin, the airflow creates white noise.

Some models come with the ability to adjust volume and tone. Electromechanical models are less common today thanks to modern technology, although they’re still a favorite of many people for a number of reasons I’ll list below.

2. Electronic models

An electronic model generates sound patterns stored in digital memory thanks to microchips. The circuit board drives a speaker to produce sound. Many offer a digital volume control along with different sound options.

This type typically provides sound options like those from nature. Some can reproduce everyday sounds that people find calming such as electric fans, a running river, and rain.

Electronic vs electromechanical sound machines

Electromechanical vs electronic white noise machines comparison image

Electromechanical and electronic (“solid-state”) white noise machines both have advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other. Saying one is “best” isn’t always the case.

Electromechanical models are both easy to use and very reliable. They also create the “whoosh” sound of real fan blades spinning which is a very distinctive sound. They’re incredibly easy to use as most have very basic controls.

One disadvantage is that they use more electrical power than solid-state models and need an outlet for power (no battery options for portability).

Electronic sound machine advantages

Solid-state units offer a lot more features but aren’t as easy to use due to having more buttons settings. The artificial noise patterns are often very good but the sound quality greatly depends on the design quality & parts used.

The disadvantage is that they’re not for everyone. They’re not a good choice for the elderly or anyone who doesn’t wish to deal with pushbuttons & more advanced features.

How to best use a sound machine for dog & outside noises

Clip art image of man sleeping with white noise machine blocking dog barking

Manufacturers recommend placing a noise machine not several feet away instead of right next to it. For best results, place it in a place closer to where noise enters the room. As it’s further away from you, you’re able to have the volume set higher than you would immediately next to you. In some cases more machines are needed if the outside noise is hard to block.

Setting up a noise machine only requires a few steps: adjust the volume as needed to a comfortable level that can block dog sounds and choose your preferred sound type or tone (if applicable) that works best for you.

Desks, tables, or nightstands (in other parts of the room) are great places for them. While you can use yours very close to your bed if you feel it’s necessary, it’s almost never a good idea.

Locating a noise machine a least 3 feet away is best and gives it the opportunity to cover more of the room.

How many noise machines do I need?

How many white noise machines for dog barking question clip art

Marpac, manufacturer of the popular Dohm Class white noise machine, recommends one machine for every 300 square feet. That’s about a 10 foot x 30 foot room for reference.

In some cases you might need to buy a 2nd one if you’re having especially bothersome noise you’re dealing with.

For a typical home or apartment use (such as, in your bedroom or living room) one is usually enough. For larger areas or if outside noise is especially annoying, 2 sound machines work better.

2 units can be placed in different locations to give better sound coverage or more volume that one unit alone Be sure to pay attention to the volume of the outside noise as some sounds machines offer a higher volume than others.

2. Marpac Dohm Classic – Simple, great-sounding classic technology you can rely on.

Marpac Dohm Classic white noise machine 1As a previous owner of the Marpac Dohm Classic, I can tell you before from personal experience why this timeless classic is so popular: It delivers classic white noise sound in a package that’s hassle-free to use.

The classic electromechanical engineering design means it’s a snap to use and always delivers great-sounding white noise. Unlike some of its weaker competition, it doesn’t mimic that traditional, gentle white noise sound: It’s the real thing!

Inside are real miniature fan blades powered by a reliable motor matched to the body to create a gentle, soothing sound you’ll fall in love with right away.

Super easy to use

The Marpac Dohm Classic is without a doubt one of the easiest to use you’ll find anywhere.

There’s a simple on/off switch with 2 fan speed positions that deliver two volume settings. No hassle at all – just super easy sound blocking ready at your fingertips.

Marpac Dohm Classic blackThe Marpac Dohm Classic is a basic but elegant choice and available in two colors besides white: Tan and black, where available. Both the black and tan options are equally sharp-looking. They’re especially a good match for professional environments.

Adjusting the tone is easy: simply rotate the outer shell and the tone and pitch of the white noise will change with it as the airflow pattern changes.

It’s a great little unit and one I recommend personally to people who prefer a simple and reliable way to block outside noises like dogs and birds.

I wish another power source also was provided (such as a USB power port for example) but that’s a minor complaint for a well-rounded design that has stood the test of time.

  • Available in 3 colors: white, black, tan
  • Many happy buyers
  • Effective and natural white noise produced
  • 2 volumes available (2 speed positions)

Like the adjustable housing on other models like the Marpac Dohm, customizing sound with the Snooz is as easy as rotating the outer body. Just twist it to get the right pitch and tone just like you want.

Using the top-mounted controls is a breeze on the Snooz – they’re clearly marked and put you in easy control of the 10-step volume range. It offers some of the best volume today as you’ll get from a 46dB to a beefy 87dB of loudness to choose from.

It’s a good sounding unit. In my opinion, being able to easily customize the noise type and pitch makes it even more pleasant to use.

The Best White Noise Machines For Apartments – 5 Smart Buys For Your Money

Best white noise machine for apartments featured image

Are outside noises bothering you when you just want to read, relax, or study? It’s time to consider the benefits of a white noise machine.

Masking unwanted sounds and noises will help you get a huge relief from the stresses of the day. To help, I’ll show you five of the best white noise machines for apartments. Each one is an excellent buy for your money.

There’s also some great general info and tips about what noise is, how sound machines work, and much more.

Contents

What is white noise?

White noise graph image example

Above: a white noise display on a graph of volume vs audio frequency. “White noise” is a scientific term that describes what happens when we hear an equal amount of sound generated across the entire range of human hearing. It has other uses, but for most of us it provides an effective way to block out distracting sounds.

White noise is a really interesting topic and one that people get confused about or misunderstand sometimes.

For apartment use, here’s the important part to know: White noise is sound that covers the entire range of what our ears can hear. As it turns out, a good quality white noise sound machine will generate a pleasing noise range to block out unwanted sounds.

Since it covers the full spectrum of what we are capable of hearing, white noise is helpful in covering (also called masking) everyday sounds and noises that would otherwise be distracting and disruptive in your apartment.

I’ve noticed how effective one or more white noise machines are – especially when people are in different rooms throughout the apartment – whether it’s irritating neighbors, traffic sounds, or other sources of noise.

Note: The term “white noise” is often used interchangeably with brown noise or pink noise, though these describe different sound patterns.

While some machines do generate brown noise, I’ll stick with using the name “white noise” for the purpose of this post.

White noise benefits & use

Image of a white noise machine on table in apartment living room

A white noise machine can really help you get the most out of your apartment. After all, you do deserve to be able to focus, read, study, or just relax, don’t you? Why put up with distracting, stressful & irritating sounds if you don’t have to?

Everyone appreciates a calm environment once they get home, right? I know I do, and I’ve learned first hand how much a white noise machine can help. They really can make a difference!

You’ll generally find white noise used in the following ways:

  • In businesses
  • Small study rooms
  • Physical or behavioral therapist offices
  • Helping babies sleep
  • Relieving stress
  • Blocking outdoor noise at work
  • Improving your mood

Anywhere there’s a need to mask annoying & bothersome sounds from the indoors or outside these wonderful machines help create an environment that makes it easy to relax and focus.

Who wants to pay for an apartment, only to have to listen to your neighbors and never be able to chill out after a long day? You want positive, calm energy – not distractions making your life uncomfortable.

Instead, it’s often best to place them at least several feet away to mask noise more effectively as they’ll cover more area and block incoming sounds throughout the room.

How does a white noise machine work?

How to block outside sounds white noise diagram

The range of soothing sound produced by a white noise machine “masks”, or covers up, outside sound around your apartment or townhome. The result is that since your brain can no longer detect the bothersome sounds are present, they’re effectively blocked and eliminated.

It’s important to remember that white noise machines don’t remove sound. Instead, they eliminate unwanted sounds by covering up the frequencies where those sounds “live.”

Since these machines cover the full spectrum of what humans can hear, as long as the distracting sounds inside or outside your apartment are equal or less in volume those sounds will be masked and you won’t hear them.

But how is that possible?

It’s all about your brain (and ears too)

Our brains can’t process too much audio information at once. We’ve all been in situations where everyone’s talking at the same and yet and no one is really “heard,” because the voices all drown each other out.

This is the principle behind how sound machines work: All the frequencies that we can hear are masked by white noise, whether it’s outside traffic, a radio or TV, or your neighbor’s conversation in a nearby apartment.

The device produces sounds or noise by one of several means I’ll cover below. As long as the unwanted sound volume isn’t louder than the sound produced by the machine our brains will only register what the white noise machine is generating.

Then end result is that the noise is covered up (also called masking) and your brain won’t detect the outside sounds anymore. They’re effectively blocked and it’s like they don’t exist at all!

How sound machines generate noise

Image of electromechanical vs electronic sound machines compared

White noise sound machines use either mechanical parts and a motor (left) or solid-state electronic designs to create the sound that helps block outside distractions.

Sound machines make white noise by one of two design types.

1. Electromechanical generation

This type of machine (usually older, simpler models) generates white noise by using an electric motor and small fan blades to quickly spin, creating both airflow and sounds. Due to modern technology they’re no longer as common as they once were.

However, while they’re simplistic and don’t have the same options modern electronic-based models offer, some people still prefer them and they’re still popular sellers.

They also offer another advantage: They’re really simple to use!

2. Electronic models

An electronic model uses integrated circuit components to generate patterns of noise or other sounds that drive a loudspeaker. They also offer additional benefits like finely adjustable volume, auto-off timers, and additional sound patterns from nature or other types.

Electronic vs electromechanical sound machines

Electromechanical vs electronic white noise machines comparison image

Electromechanical and electronic (“solid-state”) white noise machines both have advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other. Saying one is “best” isn’t always the case.

There are pros and cons to both types. Electromechanical devices draw more electricity and can’t offer sound options solid-state electronics models can. However, they’re extremely easy to use, very reliable, and they’re also an especially excellent choice for the elderly and people who hate fuss or hassle.

An electronic sound generator is much more sophisticated but not quite as simple to operate as an electromechanical model. On the other hand, with artificially generated noise patterns you can get a choice of different sounds & noise option otherwise not possible.

For example, if you love sounds like rain, a raging river, or animals you might find them to be a better choice.

For apartment living (especially if you don’t live alone) it’s very important to pick a well-designed unit as the human voice contains bass frequencies which can be hard to block.

Have you ever tried to study or relax while hearing your neighbors annoying, loud talking? It’s very easy to notice and can be anywhere from slightly distracting to incredibly annoying!

How to use a white noise machine in your apartment

White noise machine bedroom clip art

Manufacturers recommend placing a noise machine not immediately next to your bed but several feet away. Optimally, you’ll place it in a location closer to where the noise enters the room. As it’s further away from you, you’re able to have the volume set higher than you would immediately next to you. In some cases additional machines may be needed if the outside noise is harder to block out.

The good news is that there are only a few steps to setting up a noise machine for optimal use. They’re generally very easy to use.

For best results, place it (or them) in a good location away from your bed at least several feet and higher off of the floor if possible.

This is helpful for 2 reasons:

  1. You’ll need to adjust the volume to block snoring sounds you’re hearing. If the machine is located too close to your bed you’re much more likely to turn the volume down a lot which will affect its performance.
  2. If placed on the floor, sounds may potentially enter more easily than if it were located on a desk or table for above the floor. Consider where you actually hear them entering the room.

Setting up a noise machine only requires a few steps: adjust the volume as needed to a comfortable level that can block apartment sounds and choose your preferred sound type or tone (if applicable) that works best for you.

Desks, tables, or nightstands (in other parts of the room) are great locations for them. While you can use yours very close to your bed if you feel it’s necessary, it’s almost never a good idea.

Locating a noise machine a least 3 feet away is recommended and gives it the opportunity to cover more of the room.

How many noise machines do I need?

Marpac, manufacturer of the popular Dohm Class white noise machine, recommends one machine for every 300 square feet. That’s about a 10 foot x 30 foot room, for example.

In some cases you might need to buy a 2nd one if you’re having especially bothersome noise you’re dealing with.

For a small apartment (for example, in your bedroom or living room) one is usually fine. For larger apartments or if outside noise is especially annoying, 2 sound machines are recommended.

2 units can be placed in different locations in order to provide better sound coverage as well as a bit more volume than one unit alone can provide.

What is white noise?

White noise graph image exampleGraph showing white noise and how it works in terms of sound. The term “white noise” describes a sound source that produces audio noise throughout the entire range of human hearing. This is very important as I’ll explain later.

White noise is an interesting topic! Of course, we’re most concerned about how it can give us relief for lots of problems caused by distracting outside sounds.

Technically speaking, white noise is a range of noise audio that covers the full range of sound frequencies your ears can hear. It is used to mask – or cover up and block – bothersome sounds.

Many of the sounds you hear every day and that would distract you occur in a few portions of the range of human hearing. White noise is very different from music because it’s intended to cover the entire audio range of human hearing (about 20 Hertz to 20 Kilohertz).

By contrast, music for example only has portions of sound from a singer, synthesizers, and so on that occur in a few areas of the range your ears can hear.

People respond well naturally to soothing sounds like it and other sources of pleasing audio, so it can also help you relax and enter a lower-stress and more focused state, too.

Where is white noise used?

It’s often used in places like baby nurseries, hotel rooms, therapy offices, and of course bedrooms. People who have difficulty sleeping while traveling (like me) often carry a small white noise machine to help.

Just about anywhere you need relief from distractions white noise is extremely helpful.

How white noise blocks soundsHow how white noise blocks sounds box fan diagram

Box sounds produce white noise that works to block out bothersome sounds by what’s called masking. This simply means they cover up audio that is equal to or below the volume of the noise generated by a box fan. When sounds are covered up sufficiently, your brain doesn’t process them or spend any time being distracted by them. They’re effectively eliminated that way.

The noise produced by a box fan doesn’t actually remove sounds that bother you – they help by a process called masking.

That simply means the noise a fan produces covers up – or “masks” – those distracting outside sounds. However, to our brain, it’s as if they don’t even exist at all. Box fans effectively eliminate troublesome sources of sound by keeping our brains from being able to detect and react to them.

The human brain can’t pick out separate noises when there are many mixed together. There’s simply too much information to process, and when sounds become combined together they can’t be separated.

For example, try listening to 2 or 3 music sources at once. After a certain point, it’s impossible to pick apart the individual instruments and so on. That principal is how masking works.

Since your brain will never hear them (as long as they’re not louder than the white noise) it’s like they don’t exist!

Note: Technically speaking, box fans actually don’t produce white noise but produce “brown noise.” People tend to use the term “white noise” interchangeably with brown noise which is similar but different in how the upper range of frequencies is produced.

However, that’s just a trivial detail to know.

How box fans make white noise

How box fans produce white noise diagram

Box fans create noise from a combination of sources that result in a soothing and calming noise. The movement of air from the input (suction) side of the fan, the fan motor itself, the air disturbances at the blades, and the air blowing from the front side combine to mask outside distractions.

Box fans are accidentally good producers of white noise. I say that because they’re not designed to do so…it’s a by-product of how they work.

Box fans have several factors and sources of noise that combine to result in a soothing white noise:

  • The rush of air on the input (suction) side
  • The electric motor’s vibration and hum it produces
  • The fan blade noise due to rapidly turning and moving air
  • Air forced out of the front side which blows forcefully in the room

To our ears this appears as a mixed “white noise” effect that’s rhythmic, calming, and helpful for blocking many of the sources of sound that make studying, relaxing, sleeping, and life in general much harder.

Because of their design, they tend to vibrate a bit which also lends itself to affect their sound output as well. The alternating current (AC) motor of a fan often produces a gentle hum reflective of its 60 Hertz power source (or 50 Hertz for some countries outside the USA).

Which way do you put a fan in the window?

Which way to put a fan in window diagram

There isn’t really a “best” way to place a box fan in a window. This is due to the physics of gas (air) movement. A fan in a window creates air pressure (fresh air moving in) which is offset by an equal and opposite air pressure (old air moving out). To get a room filled with fresh air more quickly, however, it’s best to have at least 1 more window open. That allows air to circulate more rapidly and more efficiently.

For the most part, it doesn’t matter a lot which way you place a box fan in a window. However, there are a few ways to use it depending on what you need.

That’s because of the laws of physics involved: airflow in = airflow out. In other words, the air movement a fan brings in will be equal to the air leaving.

Here are my general guidelines you may find helpful:

1. If you have only 1 window in a room, I recommend you place the fan facing in.

This allows the fan to force air into the room and push back against the window. In some situations it will help keep the fan upright.

You’ll still have air circulate. However, it will take much longer than having another window open as the window opening size will be more limited (air circulation will be restricted and the old air won’t be able to escape as easily).

2. If you have 2 or more windows, leave at least 1 open for maximum cooling and air circulation.

With at least one additional window open you can have great airflow and cooling within a room. That’s because a room with only one window open (and with the fan placed in the same window) is forcing air against more pressure as the air can’t flow easily back outside.

When a second or third window is open the resistance to the fan’s air pressure is removed and air can escape easily at the same rate it came in.

Ultimately, in either case, I recommend you place a fan in the window facing inward (air blowing INTO the room). That’s because:

  • It may help hold the fan in the window due to the backpressure
  • Box fans sometimes produce more noise on the output side due to the fan blades facing forward.

It’s a relatively minor difference but in my experience one that works best.

It’s a unique design and a refreshing, affordable what to get white noise anywhere you need it. One drawback to be aware of is that there’s no carrying handle included like the other models I’ve mentioned.

One cool advantage is that the base supports can be removed for easy window use. The top of the fan is free from obstructions that make it hard to close a window on.

PROS:
  • High airflow rate
  • Safety-fused power plug
  • Base supports work well and easy to install

2. Lasko 3720 Weather Shield Performance – Worry-free white noise and window cooling. Leave it in and forget it!

Lasko 3720 Weather Shield box fan front image
I absolutely love using box fans in my window. The cooling effect and fresh air I enjoy simply can’t be beaten. However, when the rain comes it’s a huge inconvenience to stop what I’m doing and take it out of the window every time.

The Lasko Model 3270 Weather Shield Performance fan solves that problem as well as being a great performer that you don’t want to pass up.

It also produces some of the best and smoothest white noise I’ve heard from a box fan.

Lasko 3720 Weather Shield box fan in window

The Lasko Weather Shield #3720 looks great and works really well in windows…including yours. Classic style and operation mean hassle-free use. The design protects the electric motor in case of rain while in the window – no more having to pull a fan out and losing your wonderful fresh air and background fan noise!

What’s unique about the Weather Shield is the design Lasko built in. In case of light rain, the motor is protected from exposure to water by a weather shield for worry-free operation.

3 quiet fan speeds provide excellent airflow and cooling. Despite being quiet enough to avoid distracting you, the 3720 still provides enough volume to block out troublesome and annoying sounds.

t’s a wonderful and very calming fan I’ve enjoyed testing myself.

Lasko 3720 box fan features zoomed image

(Left) The unique Wind Ring design on the grill helps focus air movement and increase performance by enhancing air speed. (Right) A great-looking and simple rotary control makes operation easy. The top-mounted carry handle lets you move the fan easily as well.

Additionally, the front grill has a unique Wind Ring design which helps maximize fan performance by directing air movement for optimal airspeed. It’s a cool design touch I haven’t seen in most competitor’s products.

The top-mounted rotary control works well and in my opinion, is a nice touch. It’s reliable and the “feel” is very good as well.

No complaints about the handle – it’s easy to use and makes positioning the fan a breeze, too. It’s energy-efficient thanks to the Save-Smart design. You can use it as much as you like for less than 2 cents per hour!

Like other Lasko models, a fused safety plug is included in the power cord to prevent potential hazards due to electrical shorts or overloads.

Rounding out all the wonderful features is a 2 year limited warranty.

PROS:
  • Weather resistant (can leave in window)
  • 3 speed operation
  • High-performance airflow design
  • Metal body
  • Quiet volume
  • Very pleasing white noise

What is “white noise”?

White noise graph image example

A graph showing the range of sound that makes up what we call “white noise.” Basically it’s a way of describing a range of sounds of nearly equal volume that cover a large range your ears can hear. It’s also used in other areas of science, although for most people it’s simply a large combination of sound frequencies that can block out unwanted noise.

White noise has some wonderful uses but it’s sometimes confused or misunderstood.

Basically, white noise is the production of audio frequencies over the entire range of human hearing. Because of this, it’s capable of covering up sounds that would distract you or cause problems at work otherwise.

Noises you may hear every day like coworkers talking, outdoor sounds, music, and more are produced in a limited range of audio frequencies. White noise, however, is produced over the entire range of audio your ears and brain can interpret.

It has many uses, and they’re especially important for areas where privacy and focus are needed. A great example is client meetings where a company speaks privately in a quiet room with professionals about sensitive personal matters or confidential information.

Note: The term “white noise” is sometimes confused with and used interchangeably with brown noise or pink noise, which aren’t the same.

These other color names are used to described sound patterns of different types. For the purposes of this post, although many noise machines produce brown noise (or other sounds), I’ll refer to it as white noise as is commonly done.

White noise machine benefits

Cubicle with quite please sign

Don’t resort to extremes to get privacy! White noise machines are a non-intrusive way to protect your personal and business-related conversations.

Like many people out there, I’m easily distracted while at work and find the gentle, constant sounds of a fan or other noise source to be helpful.

It’s a bit difficult to concentrate when there are coworkers around you making sounds from talking, eating, coughing, and many other annoying sounds. Believe me, I’ve definitely been very bothered by these in the past, so I know exactly how it feels!

Because of this, I’ve learned exactly how beneficial white noise machines are and I use them regularly.

How sound machines help at work

Sound machines (white noise machines) are great when you need privacy at work:

  • Blocking coworkers talking
  • Eliminating distracting background sounds
  • Putting you in a better, low-stress mood
  • They help with attention & concentration problems
  • A great alternative for inconvenient fans

They’re also excellent for use at home or while traveling on the job as well. Many are small enough to be easily packed in a backpack or travel bag.

Because of how the human brain works, outside sound naturally causes us to divert our attention away from what we’re doing. While that’s great when your outdoors or doing different activities, when you’re working it can be a real nuisance as you’ll lose productivity and feel more and more stress.

While many people often use small fans for the same purpose, white noise machines are better as they’re able to provide a wider variety of sounds to help you relax. Most are very energy-efficient, too.

How white noise machines work

How to block outside sounds white noise diagram

Sounds machines produce white noise of different types that cover a wide range in the audio spectrum. This means that the sound they produce can cover up (and effectively block) distracting sounds. When the nearby sound at your workplace or cubicle is equal to or less than the volume blocked by the white noise you’ll no longer notice it. It’s a great way to solve the aggravating problem of distractions.

White noise machines work by creating sound patterns that mask or cover-up, unwanted noise. This effectively means you’ll never hear them and it’s as if they’re eliminated.

As long as the noise in question (for example, a machine nearby or coworkers talking) has a volume level that’s about the same or less than the volume of the white noise the sound will be effectively eliminated.

This works because our brains can’t tell a widely mixed range of sounds apart – there’s just too much audio information to process. Instead, the distracting noises around you at work will no longer be noticed by your brain and you won’t be distracted by them.

This process is called masking and is the same principle used for noise-canceling headphones and some other products.

For example, if you’ve got a TV, radio, and a fan on all at the same time can you tell the sounds apart? No, and that’s the basic principle behind how they work.

In the workplace, it can be especially difficult to block sound without disturbing others. While using an electric fan is one option, they can be cumbersome and don’t always work well in all environments or situations.

How sound machines generate noise

Sound (white noise) machines generate masking sounds by one of 2 ways typically:

  1. Electromechanical devices
  2. Solid-state electronics and a speaker

Years ago electromechanical designs were the most common type sold. Thanks to today’s technology they’re rarer.

Most consist of a type of compact fan assembly and an electric motor. When the fan spins rapidly the device generates a type of white noise due to specially designed air passageways. Some also allow adjustment of the sound tone and/or volume.

Electronic vs electromechanical sound machines

Image of electromechanical vs electronic sound machines compared

Electronic (also called solid-state) models use integrated circuit components to generate a pre-determined noise pattern. The sound generator circuit board drives a speaker and produces sound as well as allows an adjustable volume level.

These types typically also offer a number of selectable sound types like nature sounds, fan sounds, or other audio choices depending on your preferences.

Both types have their advantages and disadvantages.

While electromechanical types are very simple to use they need more electricity than electronic models. They also don’t offer the sound options other types do.

Electronic sound machines are a bit more complicated to use (but still user-friendly) and use an artificially generated noise pattern scheme. While for some people this is perfectly fine, some prefer the “whoosh” sound of the fan in an electromechanical model.

Additionally, in some cases, electronic-based white noise machines don’t provide the bass-blocking ability of electromechanical models.

It’s very important to pick a well-designed unit, as the human voice contains bass frequencies and can be one of the most annoying (and distracting) sound types at work.

It’s important to pick well-designed and proven models.

How many white noise machines should I get?

White noise machine hallway placement diagram

When blocking sound in an entire work area, one approach I’ve seen used is to “stagger” white noise machines in the hallway outside as shown above. In that case, you’ll need 2 machines for every 3 offices/cubicles or so. Otherwise, just plan on getting 1 for each individual office or cubicle as needed.

The number of white noise machines you’ll need depends on your sound levels at work and your work situation.

I recommend the following, generally:

  • 1 per cubicle or office
  • For multiple-office use, 2 for every 3 placed in between entrances

Marpac, a manufacturer of some of the most popular models, recommends one machine for every 300 square feet of room size (roughly a 10 x 30 foot office).

However, if you need much larger coverage and sound blocking ability, a great idea is to place them in the central hallway or the walking area between offices. I’ve seen them used effectively in offices placed on the floor in a staggered fashion rather than in the offices.

For that, expect to use about 2 for every 3 office doors, placed alternately on each opposing side. See the image above for an illustration.

For workrooms or offices where less are needed, about 2 should work well unless the bothersome sounds are much worse.

Best white noise machine for therapy office editors choice image
Looking for a great buy? The LectroFan from Adaptive Sound Technologies has a wide range of features thanks to its smart design and great acoustical sound technology.

It’s a great value, too!

The Lectrofan uses modern solid-state electronics along with a responsive central speaker to produce effective, soothing white noise that’s great for an office.

It’s also one of the best-rated and best-selling models today!

You’ll get a total of 20 great noise masking sounds:

  • 10 fan sounds
  • 10 ambient noise patterns (white noise, brown noise, and more)

What I really love about the LectroFan are the fan sounds it produces. Instead of producing only one like many competitors, it provides several: box fan, oscillating fan, and a low-tone, mellow-sounding fan.

Ambient noise variations such as “coral”, “tan”, and “pure white” are unique sounds that let you pick from a cool variety to help you relax or get work done undistracted.

Don’t worry – no costly batteries are needed! You can power it right from a USB port or 120V power outlet. A UK/European Union voltage model is available as well.

Don’t care for the white model? The LectroFan is available in a nice-looking black version as well.

2. Marpac Dohm Classic – A classic favorite that’s simple to use

Marpac Dohm Classic white noise machine 1

I’ve owned and tested one of the most popular white noise machines you’ll find today – the Marpac Dohm Classic. I’m happy to say it’s a great one

With the classic design, you’ll get traditional design elements the simple-to-use and reliable electromechanical setup provides. It uses a motor and fan-based generator to produce natural, real white noise.

There’s a simple on-off switch with 2 volume positions – no complicated controls to fuss with! Put the switch into one of two positions and enjoy a relaxing and distraction-free work or office environment.

Marpac Dohm Classic blackFeaturing a basic yet elegant design the Dohm classic is a great-looking model. You can also pick from black and tan color options too.

Want a different sound tone? Just rotate the outside shell that allows you to change the white noise sound as you do. Rotating the cover adjust airflow vents to control the pitch of the white noise as it runs.

It’s a great little unit and I enjoyed owning and testing. I do have one minor complaint however: there’s no option to power it from a USB port. You’ll need to use a 120V outlet for it.

PROS:
  • Extremely easy to use
  • Available in 3 colors: white, black, tan
  • Many happy buyers
  • Effective and natural white noise produced
  • 2 volumes available (2 speed positions)
  • Adjustable sound control
  • Classic, simple, and reliable design
  • 1 year warranty
  • Great customer service from Marpac
CONS:
  • No variable volume – 2 positions only
  • Cannot produce simulated nature sound like some electronic models
  • No timer or auto-off features

Hands-down it’s one of the most popular and easiest-to-use white noise machines out there, and I highly recommend it. Especially for people who just want a simple, basic, and good sound machine.

3. Snooz White Noise Sound Machine – A stylish compromise of features plus classic technology…the best of both worlds!

Snooz white noise machine image 1Ready for one of the best? The Snooz white noise machine is a more advanced white noise machine that marries classic sound generation with today’s convenience features.

It uses a brushless electric motor driving a computer-designed internal fan to deliver great white noise and help you work better and enjoy your day without distractions. Select from 10 great volume settings.

Similar to the Marpac Dohm product, it’s easy to customize the type of sound your Snooz makes by simply twisting the outside body.

Snooz white noise machine rotation diagram

The Snooz’s sound production is easily adjustable. Want a different white noise sound tone? Just twist the outside housing and listen as the pitch and noise type changes. Touch controls are provided and are clearly marked, making operation a snap.

It’s one of the best for adequate volume sold today! You’ll get from a low 46dB to a high 87dB of volume – all your choice using the 10-step volume feature.

Sound quality is great and it’s one of the best I’ve found for masking noises at the office or workplace like coworkers speaking, printers, and much, much more. I like both the sound and how it helps me focus.

Snooz white noise machine phone app image

Advanced control & features are included! You can control one – or more – Snooz noise machines from the convenience of your smartphone. A free app interface allows you to control all your white noise machines either at work or at home. Easily adjust volume, on & off times, or more anytime you like.

While the features and performance I mentioned alone are great, there’s even more! A Bluetooth feature allows easy control of all major functions from your Android or iPhone device using the free app.

An amazing auto on-off scheduler allows hands-free automatic operation every day so you won’t even have to turn it on or off yourself.  To add even more convenience, you can control multiple units from one phone.

Very nice!

It’s a great little unit and it’s available it two classy, style-friendly color choices too. Overall while it’s more expensive than other models, I think it’s one of the best today and definitely an excellent choice.

PROS:
  • Bluetooth smartphone remote control (iPhone, Android)
  • Adjustable sound/tone
  • Simple operation
  • Touch controls
  • Natural white noise production
  • Brushless long-life motor
  • Two colors to choose
  • Low power consumption (9W)
  • Operate multiple rooms from phone app
  • 10-level volume control
  • Great performance and sound masking ability
  • Auto-scheduling feature
  • Great for travel
CONS:
  • Limited to 10-step volume control
  • No black or white model available
  • No WiFi option
  • Cannot operate scheduling without phone app
  • More expensive than others
  • No USB power option

Is it the cheapest? Certainly not. However, it’s simply one of the best-sounding, best-performing noise machines you can get today.

The smartphone control features clearly set it apart from the pack, and I love it.

It’s a winner, as you can clearly see from the excellent buyer reviews and great feedback at Amazon.

4. Avantek White Noise Basic – A smart, affordable compromise between features, performance, and convenience

Avantek white noise machine basic black model image

Need something affordable but that’s still a great value? The Avantek White Noise Basic is a smart choice for your money.

I’ve found it to be a great compromise between sound production, quality, features, and convenience. For below $50 it’s well worth having a look at.

The volume control is also one of the best available, providing 30 increments to perfectly set the level exactly where needed. It’s also one of the loudest, too, with up to a whopping 115dB of volume at maximum.

That’s much more than nearly all the competition can provide!

A great built-in memory feature means that at the next use it will restore the previous settings you used – very nice! You won’t need to fumble around with it every day when getting your workday started.

Avantek white noise machine basic white model image
Don’t care for the black version? That’s ok! The Avantek Basic is available in a more traditional white version, too. The Basic is one of the best inexpensive white noise machines I’ve had the pleasure to use.

I like the nice-looking satin black finish and blue trim on top, although I realize that’s not for everyone. The great news is that you can also choose from the white version as well so it’s not really a problem.

The controls are really easy to use – move the volume up or down as well as change the current sound type by using the top-mounted buttons. What I really like about it is the familiar and intuitive design: buttons are extremely similar to those used on an MP3 player.

You’ll get a wonderful choice of 20 sound options to keep office distractions in check:

  • 6 fan choices
  • 6 white noise choices
  • 8 nature sound selections

That’s not all though – there’s also an auto-off timer which allows you to turn it on and walk away. After the selected time it will turn itself off automatically.

PROS:
  • 18 month warranty
  • Simple controls – similar to MP3 player
  • Volume adjustment up/down buttons
  • Auto-off timer: 1-7 hours
  • 20 sounds available
  • Memory function for restoring last settings automatically
  • 2 color choices (black, white)
  • AC power or USB power inputs
  • Soft-fade volume decrease at end of timer
  • Non-looping sounds (continuous without breaks)
  • Auto-off timer LED indicator lights (indicates hour selection)
  • Lower power use
CONS:
  • 7-hour auto-off timer is a bit short for typical sleep
  • No smartphone control
  • Can’t adjust sound tones – plays fixed sound types
  • No headphone jack
  • No touch controls
  • Ambient sound options only available in the Pro model

If you’re on a budget and don’t want low quality but a good performer and great value, I recommend the Avantek Basic.

It’s a nice little model. Buy with confidence, as it has a close to 95% satisfaction rating over at Amazon.

5. Big Red Rooster BRRC107 Sound Machine – A good low-cost basic choice

Big Red Rooster BRRC107 sound machine image 1

Tight on money, or don’t want to spend a lot on a sound machine for your office? Here’s a great option.

The Big Red Rooster BRRC107 can definitely help you get work done better without breaking the bank.

The BRRC107 can generate 6 different background sounds:

  • Rain
  • Gentle brook
  • Thunder
  • White noise
  • Ocean sounds
  • Summer night

Although it may be a budget model, you’ll also get a feature I absolutely love: there’s a convenient auto-off timer with settings for 15, 30, or 60 minutes of operation before it shuts off.

It’s also excellent not just for the office but for travel, too. You can use the included 120V AC power adapter for socket power or use 3 AA batteries when power is out or you’re on the go.

In case the basic white noise sounds aren’t what you’re in the mood for, nature sounds like a gentle brook or rain are a great choice and work well to add a more relaxing atmosphere in your workplace or business.

Big Red Rooster BRRC107 sound machine image 2

I have to say the controls are some of the easiest to use I’ve seen. The direct volume up and down buttons work especially well for adjusting the outside sound blockage quickly.

The sound output quality isn’t a nice as more expensive competitor I’ve listed here (such as the LectroFan or the Marpac Dohm models) but it’s still good for what you pay. For all but the pickiest buyers I think it’s fine.

My overall opinion? It’s a very good budget model for nearly anyone who needs white noise at work and would like extra options.

PROS:
  • Small size
  • Simple & clear push button controls
  • 15, 30, and 60 minute auto-off timers
  • Battery power option
  • Travel-ready design
  • 6 sound options
  • Adjustable volume controls
  • Popular model with many good reviews
  • Lower power use
  • Low cost
CONS:
  • Sound quality could better
  • No additional color options
  • Limited sound choices
  • No smartphone control
  • Timer options are limited
  • No USB power connections

It’s very affordable and I give it a thumbs up. While I would recommend spending a bit more for a better model, it’s still a great option when you can’t spend a lot.

At below $25, it’s hard to beat. Find out the current super-low price at Amazon now.

Our Editor’s choice top model

Best white noise machine for therapy office editors choice image

Hands-down, it’s tough to beat the Adaptive Sound Technologies LectroFan model. While classical motor & fan designs have a natural, distinctive sound that most electronic devices can’t match well, the LectroFan impressed me.

Considering the features, sound options (not just white noise, but lots of other sounds I love!) it’s one of the best values I’ve found today. It’s also extremely popular and a best seller!

I highly recommend it. Take a moment and see the outstanding reviews and learn why it's a best-seller at Amazon.

Looking to keep your little one cool and comfortable? There are so many fan products to choose from it’s a bit overwhelming.

Additionally, you’ll need to be sure that the one you choose won’t disturb your little one’s rest.

To help, I’ve put together a list of the 5 best tower fans for your baby. They’re great performing, well-rated, and affordable models that will keep your little one cool and comfortable. They’re very quiet, too!

Read on to learn more.

The basics of tower fans

How does a tower fan work?

Tower fans vs box fans diagram

Unlike traditional fans such as box fans, tower fans use a unique tall and cylinder-shaped design. The cylindrical fan rotates and blows air out horizontally in a tall, vertical fashion. While the average fan has its place in your home, tower fans can distribute air more efficiently, quietly, and often have many more features.

Unlike most traditional fans you’ve likely seen over the years, tower fans are pretty unique. Instead of having a round or box-shaped housing like others, they have a cylinder-shaped (“cylindrical”) design.

It’s because of their specialized design that they offer several benefits the average fan can’t.

Tower fans work by using a tall, vertical fan assembly driven by a motor in the base to blow air in a vertical pattern within the room.

Their blades are different in that they use a curved spiral shape in which the blade reaches from the top to the bottom of the blower (fan blade) assembly.

Tower fans are more effective for your baby’s room

What’s particularly interesting is how much more air coverage you’ll get from a tower fan. Not all standard fans offer oscillation but it’s a standard feature on most tower models. By comparing the diagram above you can see how much more cooling ability you’ll get for your money.

Instead of having a smaller, circular-shaped area or air blowing on you, you’ll feel a larger and taller area. Unlike regular fans, nearly all tower fans are designed to oscillate or move side-to-side, automatically if desired.

That’s very helpful and effective for cooling.

By constantly blowing an enormous amount of cooling air across a huge part of the room they’re used in your baby’s room will feel much more comfortable.

However, while being able to blow a huge amount of air, most also have many more fan speed settings than typical fans you’ll see. Some (like in my recommended products list) have a low-speed sleep ultra-quiet mode.

That’s definitely a huge benefit for your baby and ensuring your little one sleeps undisturbed.

Tower vans vs box fans and ceiling fans

Although both can cool a room, tower fans are actually easier to use than traditional designs in several ways:

  • A smaller base means they’re easier to find room for
  • Many models have a quieter operation than traditional designs
  • More selectable fan speeds
  • Easily portable
  • Can be placed near your baby more easily for better cooling
  • Special features like auto-off timers or a remote control

I like to think of them as more advanced fans that are specifically designed to give more features, better cooling, and quieter operation during use.

Ultimately the biggest advantage of buying a tower-style fan is that they can cool your baby’s room more comfortably due to better air coverage and quieter operation.

How do tower fans cool your child’s room?

How tower fans cool a room diagram

Tower fans create a cool effect by using forced convection to blow across both you and objects in your room, transferring heat into the nearby air. Convection is the scientific term that’s used to describe the movement of fluids, including gases like the air you breathe, and transfer heat. When the heat removed from your child’s body into the surrounding air you baby feels cooler.

As you read above, these types of fans are unique in that they use a tall, cylindrical design that’s especially good at focusing air out in a way that covers a wider range of space.

The result is a wonderful vertical stream of air blowing throughout your baby’s room. Basically the fan moves air very effectively across your child and their room, removing heat from, causing your little one to feel cooler.

The air also circulates continuously, keep your child from feeling overheated as the air in the room can’t sit undisturbed and build up heat or become stagnant and musty.

How does forced convection work? What does it mean?

Fans, unlike air conditioners, don’t actually cool off a room by removing heat. They work off of the principle of forced convection.

This simply means that fans force air across your body or objects in a room and transfer heat away into the nearby air, causing a cooling sensation.

As an example, think about a computer’s central processing unit (CPU). It relies on a cooling fan to draw away heat by drawing cooler air over it and removing the heat it builds up.

With a sufficient fan speed and when using a well-designed product, tower fans circulate the air in a room constantly.

They keep the air constantly moving so heat cannot begin to build up and make you and your child hot, sweaty, and cause problems sleeping.

How tower fans save money

Tower fan money saving badge imageIn case you weren’t aware, there’s another great benefit – tower fans use much less energy than air conditioners.

Air conditioners use a lot of electricity and really cause your bill to go up. The reason is that AC units not only have to power the electric fan that blows air but they also much use a power-hungry motor.

This motor drives the refrigerant compressor used to circulate the coolant and blow cold air.

However, using a quality tower fan can save up to an amazing 60% in energy use!

But what if you already have an air conditioner in your child’s room? Good news! You can benefit from both and save money at the same time.

By using the tower fan and AC together, you can use the reduce the cooling temperature of the AC and use the fan to distribute the AC’s cool air much more effectively, reducing the need to use the air conditioning as much.

In other words, adding a tower fan can boost your AC’s performance but save money at the same time.

Tower fan features to shop for

Tower fan remote control example

Picking a great fan for your baby really isn’t as tough as it may seem at first. When deciding upon a tower fan, look for some of the features that the most popular models offer. These include timers and even a remote control to switch modes from across the room or without even having to get out of bed! For the money, you’ll get a lot more value and enjoyment for your little one.

The complaint I hear from most people is that there are simply too many choices and they don’t know where to begin. Believe me when I say that I totally understand!

Even worse is spending your hard-earned money to get a nice fan for your baby but later find out you could have gotten more for the same price!

Let’s avoid that. Here are the things you should shop for in a tower fan and before spending money:

  • Remote control operation
  • Different colors & styling to better suit your room or home
  • Carrying handle
  • Auto-off timer
  • Electronic controls
  • Low-noise operation
  • Oscillation for enhanced room cooling
  • Air cleaning features
  • A popular seller with great buyer ratings

It’s definitely very important to buy models with great buyer ratings.

Quality matters!

In my experience poorly designed fans and other home air quality products are noisier, won’t perform as well, and simply can’t come close to better-designed products in terms of satisfaction.

Saving only a few dollars isn’t worth buying a fan that makes you and your little one unhappy!

Why buying better offers more

The best brands and models (see my recommended product list below) offer very quiet operation and are especially great for sleeping babies, toddlers, and other children.

A better product offers features like low-noise modes that the cheapest models don’t.

Some also offer special features like an air cleaning ionizer to trap airborne contaminants. These contaminants can cause your baby sickness, allergies, and other respiratory problems.

If you’d prefer a dedicated air cleaner than can also act as a tower, be sure to have a look at the Honeywell AirGenius 5 I reviewed here.

One of the greatest features you’ll find – and that I love – is an auto-off timer.

With it, you can leave your fan unattended all day while at work or at night and have it turn itself off to cut energy costs even more! It’s an excellent feature I recommend to everyone.

Lasko wind curve tower fan remote controlThe Wind Curve features an easy-to-use remote that controls all major functions at the touch of a button. It also stores conveniently on the back when not in use. Very nice!

PROS:
  • Great color and style options
  • Good performance and airflow
  • Quiet 3-speed operation
  • Remote control (includes batteries)
  • Remote stores on rear of unit
  • Oscillation feature

Although I have a few minor gripes with a few features (more fan speeds and more timer selections would be nice), overall it’s definitely one of my favorites. It’s reliable, looks great, and works well to cool your baby’s room.

For these many reasons and more the Lasko Wind Curve gets our Editor’s Choice award.

2. Honeywell QuietSet whole room tower fan – Advanced features with a mid-range price!

Honeywell Quietset HYF290B tower fanI’ve tested many of Honeywell’s home air quality products and was impressed each time. Let me tell you – the QuietSet 8-speed whole room tower fan doesn’t disappoint, either!

You’ll love what it offers to make your little one’s days and nights much, much more comfortable. Several of the wonderful features this well-made and flexible fan really set it apart.

However, it won’t break the bank, despite giving you more value for your dollar.

Standing a tall 40″ (101.6 cm) in height it’s packaged in a sleek satin black finish that looks great nearly anywhere.

Honeywell QuietSet tower fan remote control image

Like convenience? A super-simple remote control is included to let you adjust fan speeds and modes without hassle. No need to walk across the room or get out of bed! Just click and you’re done. When not in use it stores out of the way in the provided storage holder.

There’s a simple but extremely handy remote control included, too. While the QuietSet’s remote doesn’t offer some more advanced operations like the Lasko Wind Curve model, it’s still very useful and a feature I love.

Turn the fan on/off, use oscillation, or change fan speeds from across the room (at great convenience at night!).

The controls are some of the best I’ve seen yet. Check out the picture below to see what I mean.

Honeywell Quietset tower fan controls image

Controls are sleek, clear, and the display looks great. A fan speed/mode meter displays the selected fan mode. Push button controls allow simple operation with the press of a finger. There’s also a night dimmer option to make sure it won’t keep your baby awake.

An auto-off timer is included and provides 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 hour time delay choices. Just set the timer using the button and the fan will automatically shut off while you’re away or asleep.

Easy-touch electronic controls make the QuietSet seem more expensive than it is. The definitely a touch of class and I’m a fan of the design.

Need to move the fan closer to your child’s crib or further away? It’s easy: there’s a built-in carrying handle on the rear just for that.

Honeywell QuietSet tower fan at night in bedroom quiet sleep

Rest easy! The QuietSet fan works wonderfully at night when you and your little ones are sleeping. There’s a multi-level dimmer to keep the indicator lights low or completely off. Thanks to the extremely low noise level you or your child can enjoy a comfortable, restful sleep undisturbed.

It’s one of the best you’ll find in its class and price range. What helps really set it apart is the extremely low noise level. In fact, I was impressed, to say the least.

I do wish the remote was as full-featured (more buttons) like some other models I’ve tried. However, that’s a minor gripe considering what you get.

And did I mention? It’s extremely easy to set up – there are only a few pieces to assemble. Directions are clear and easy to follow.

PROS:
  • Available in black and white colors
  • Touch button controls
  • Sound/speed level display
  • Dimmer control with 5 levels (inc. off)
  • Very quiet operation
  • Oscillation feature
  • 1-8 hour auto-off timer
  • Remote control w/ storage on rear
  • Good cooling ability and airflow
  • Great for bedrooms and night time
  • 8 fan speed levels
  • Simple assembly
  • Great buyer reviews
CONS:
  • The remote control is limited to 3 functions
  • No half-hour choice on timer (1, 2, 4, 8 only)
  • No woodgrain trim like Lasko Wind Curve offers

The Honeywell QuietSet is an impressive, quiet, and just overall excellent tower fan. It’s one of the best you’ll find for under $75, too!

I’m impressed with the quality, looks, and performance. It’s a definite winner.

Don’t let your little one suffer from the heat any longer! Head over and find out why it's one of the top-selling fans at Amazon now.

3. Lasko Air Stik Tabletop – Small on size and price, big on convenience

Lasko Air Stick featured image blackGot a tighter budget or don’t need a full-size for your baby? There’s good news in store.

The Lasko Air Stik Ultra Slim offers low cost (around $40 or so), great convenience, and small-sized cooling ability.

Lasko manufactures a huge range of cooling and home air products including some of the best-selling models on the market. Measuring 14″ (35.6 cm) tall, it’s a an excellent choice where space is tight.

While it’s very affordable you might think it’s short on quality…it isn’t!

The Air Stick Ultra Slim tabletop fan is available in 3 great colors:

  • Black
  • Silver
  • White

It’s a great match for any nursery or baby bedroom.

The Air Stick features backlit buttons which makes it easy to see and use even at night. Choose 2 quiet yet refreshing speeds to cool your child’s crib, room, or playpen anytime you like.

Keep it right next to their bed at night – it fits well on tables and nightstands!

Lasko Air Stick desktop office use example

The Air Stik is small enough to fit in places other fans simply can’t. It fits right in your baby room, bedroom, or even mom or dad’s office at work.

Just like larger and more expensive models, there’s an oscillation feature built in too. A generous 60 degrees of fan sweep area helps circulate air and remove heat from your baby and their bed and body.

Also included in the design (unique to Lasko’s patent) is the “blue safety plug.” The power cable plug provides internal fusing in case of an electrical overload, short, or other unsafe condition.

Should a problem arise, the fuse will disable power to the fan to prevent the possibility of fire or other hazards. It’s a great bonus that adds peace of mind.

While it’s not perfect (there’s no auto-off feature or remote control) it’s still a great buy and one of the best compact tower fans in its class.

PROS:
  • Low price
  • Easy to use – simple controls
  • Backlit buttons
  • Electronic controls
  • 2 fan speeds
  • Quiet operation
  • Well-made and good quality
  • 3 colors available
  • Compact size (14″ tall)
  • Oscillation feature
  • Fused safety plug
  • Good buyer reviews
CONS:
  • No remote available
  • No auto-off timer
  • Not as quiet as more expensive models
  • No ionizer/air cleaning feature

Why spend the same money and get less? When it comes to compact fans there are a lot of choices, but the Air Stik is simply a better performer and better made than most you’ll find.

I give it a “thumbs up” and recommend it. Have a look and see why  it's one of the best-selling compact fans over at Amazon.

4. Holmes 32″ oscillating tower fan – Easy to use, high-quality, and nice features for a good price.

Holmes 32 inch HT38R-U tower fan featured image

Have you heard of Holmes and their great line of home air products? If not, you’re definitely missing out on a whole family of great choices.

I’ve tested several Holmes models and found that they’re well-made and affordable. The excellent and sharp-looking HT38R-U tower fan is another great example.

You get a great combination of features, price, and performance. It’s also one of the easiest to use tower fans I’ve ever seen.

Standing about 32″ (82 cm) in height I find it to be one of best-looking models I’ve had the pleasure to review. The base is also especially wider than many competitors at 11″ in diameter, adding a supportive and stable base to avoid tipping over.

Holmes HT38R-U controls example image
Featuring a simple control panel with clearly marked push buttons, the Holmes HT38R-U is a pleasure to use. Just touch a button to switch between 3 fan speeds, start oscillation, set the auto-off timer, and turn on/off. Buttons feature backlighting for night use as well. Very nice looking! I really like it.

What I especially like is how you get some of the great features found on more expensive competitors. For example, an auto-off timer is included to allow a “set and forget” operation.

Choose from 1, 2, 4, or 8 selectable time periods and afterward the fan will shut itself off.

An oscillation feature is included as well to offer almost 180 (yes, 180!) degrees of wide room cooling air coverage. Switch it on and the unit will gracefully move side to side, blowing comforting air into your child’s room or directly on them.

Homes HT38R-U remote control imageDespite being less expensive than some competitors, the Holmes tower fan also includes a nice little remote control. It allows convenient control of all major fan functions including oscillation.

A handy little remote control is included, too! With it, operate the fan from across your bedroom or anywhere at home within about 25 feet of range.

I was pleased to see that there’s also a nice carrying handle built into the fan, making relocating it simple and a pleasure.

PROS:
  • 3-speed fan operation
  • Black and white model choices
  • Electronic push button controls
  • Mode indicator lights
  • Oscillation feature
  • Remote control included
  • Remote operates most functions
  • Quiet operation
  • Reliable
  • Good price
  • Carry handle
  • Simple operation
  • Good buyer reviews
  • 8 hour (max) auto shutoff timer
CONS:
  • Limited to 1, 2, 4, and 8 hour shutoff settings
  • More fan speeds would be better (like the Lasko Wind Curve)
  • No ionizer/air cleaning feature
  • No dimmer functionality

There’s no need to spend a lot to keep your baby cool. The Holmes HT38R-U is a really nice choice for keeping your infant’s room comfy and tranquil quietly.

Buyer reviews are great and definitely worth checking out. I like the build quality, fan cooling performance, and features.

Head over and find out why it's one of the best-selling fans at Amazon now.

5. Pelonis 36″ FZ10-17JR – Stylish, functional, and affordable.

Pelonis FZ10-17JR tower fan imageA new contender on the block, the the Pelonis FZ10-17JR oscillating tower fan is a hidden gem you should see.

It’s backed by many happy buyer reviews as well.

The Pelonis has a beautiful modern and sleek satin black design. It’s quite nice looking, in my opinion.

The front-facing status display shows the current operation without having to walk over to the fan. Additionally, the indicator lights dim automatically after 30 seconds to avoid distractions at night.

You get 3 speeds/modes of operation:

  • Normal
  • Natural
  • Sleep (low noise mode)

Pelonis FZ10-17JR remoteThe Pelonis tower fan includes a simple but super-convenient remote control. Turn it on or off, change fan speeds, and switch on oscillation without having to stop what you’re doing!

A great little (but simple) remote control is included as well. While it’s basic (I would have liked to see a better design) it works well and allows controlling all the features you need.

It’s especially helpful when you’re within range of your baby’s crib or bed. You don’t want to have to walk over every time you need to adjust the fan, right?

Pelonis FZ10-17JR controls image

An electronic push button control panel is provided (top-facing) and is one of the best I’ve seen. Very simple, clear, and yet very elegant in design. The push buttons also have a great “feel” them and don’t feel cheap like lesser products I’ve tested.

The Pelonis tower fan also includes an oscillation function for 60 degrees of side-to-side movement to sweep the room with powerful cooling airflow.

In combination with the 36″ (91 cm) tall design, you get great nursery/baby room cooling that works well.

The fan’s noise level (sleep mode) is one of the quietest available and won’t disturb your little one.

There’s also a 7 hour programmable auto timer, too. Just set the fan’s time choice, walk away, and after time’s up the fan will shut off automatically.

It’s a fantastic feature I love – and it helps cut down on electricity use, too!

Putting the fan together is easy – no screws needed! You’ll be up and going in no time at all.

PROS:
  • User-friendly controls
  • 3-speed fan settings/modes
  • Auto-dimming indicator lights
  • Sleep (quiet) mode
  • Low-noise operation
  • Good cooling ability
  • Remote control included
  • Auto-off timer
  • Oscillation feature
  • Carrying handle
  • Good buyer reviews
  • Great looking appearance
  • Easy assembly (no screws)
CONS:
  • Remote works well but not as nice as others
  • Auto timer is limited to 7 hours max
  • Remote battery not included
  • Documentation could be better
  • Lacks other fan speeds
  • No digital level like Honeywell QuietSet fan

I do have a few minor issues with the Pelonis (no battery for the remote, limited fan speeds, and no digital fan speed level meter display) but it’s still a great overall value. Most importantly, it cools a room well and is simple to use.

Want an affordable, simple, but effective way to cool your baby and your home? The Pelonis really is a great choice.

How does white noise from a fan help?

What is white noise?

White noise is the term used to describe a sound production that’s made up of all frequencies in the audio band (the range you can hear) at equal levels.

“White” is used to describe this particular type while others such as brown and pink exist and describe similar noise but with different acoustical levels in certain frequency ranges.

How white noise helps

How how white noise blocks sounds box fan diagram

White noise helps by “masking” bothersome noise and creating a more relaxed and distraction-free environment for. Sounds you otherwise would hear are “covered” (masked) by the sound your fan generates, resulting in it effectively eliminating it. As long as the outside sound is of an equal or lesser volume than the white noise it can be blocked.

Fans can improve your quality of life using the principle of sound masking. This means that the noise it generates simple “covers”, or masks, the sounds that cause you problems and make sleeping or concentrating more difficult.

In reality, the fan isn’t actually removing outside sounds – but for all practical purposes, our brains think it’s gone.

This is because when many sounds are combined together well (especially with noise!) our brains can’t “hear” the distractions anymore.

The result is that as long as the bothersome outside sounds aren’t able to exceed the white noise level we no longer hear them.

Sleep like a baby!

Image of a woman sleeping comfortably

It’s a well-known fact that infants and children are able to sleep more readily with gentle sounds. For example, dishwashers, washing machines, and other sources have a pretty steady and rhythmic “pattern” that affects our brains in a pleasant way.

The psycho-acoustical effect of a soothing noise causes a pleasing and focused state in both many people’s minds and bodies. The result is better sleep as well as better concentration.

It’s especially helpful to have a fan when you travel for many adults or children sleeping in a new environment can be tough. You’re not accustomed to your surroundings and haven’t had time to adapt.

New environments mean new nuances and small sounds you’re no used to which can hurt your quality of sleep. I speak from personal experience!

How fans make white noise

How box fans produce white noise diagram

“White noise”, the soothing sound produced by many fans, is produced by a number of things that happen when a fan is running. It’s generally caused by the air turbulence created by the blades but often contains the sound of the fan motor, too. When a fan run runs, the air is drawn from the rear and forced out the front which causes noise the noise.

Fans (especially traditional ones like box fans) are an easy-to-use and economical source of noise to cover sounds, reduce stress after a hard day, and promote better sleep.

The funny thing is that fans aren’t intentionally designed to make noise! It’s a wonderful side effect of how they work.

There are several factors involved which result in that soothing noise we love:

  • Air passing by the surfaces of the fan’s body
  • The rush of air on the input (suction) and output (forward) sides
  • Fan blades spinning through and disturbing the air
  • Turbulence caused by the nearby air being disturbed due to blowing
  • The gentle humming and operation of the motor itself

These factors combine to produce the cumulative effect as a “white noise” our ears and then brain receive. The result is the rhythmic, calming, and most of all helpful sound.

As I described, this white noise is used to “mask, or cover, and effectively eliminate bothersome sounds as far as our brains are concerned.

Because of how fan work, they often have a tendency to vibrate on a very small scale which also contributes to a gentle undertone you’ll enjoy. Both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC, like from USB power or batteries) have sound characteristics you’ll hear without realizing it.

Fan options to shop for

Clip art man shopping online at desk silhouetteThere are many features to look for and consider before purchasing a fan that typically don’t apply for standard home fans.

For example:

  • Power sources: Will an electrical outlet or USB power be available? Do you need cordless (battery) power?
  • Fan speeds: Will a simple single-speed fan be ok or are more important to you?
  • Folding/compact size: Is a slightly large fan ok or is space really tight?
  • Price
  • Warranty length
  • Positioning or swivel features

Be sure to give these a thought when shopping. However, you can’t go wrong with the products I’ve researched, tested, and that I recommend below.

Important foreign travel fan tips

Pac2Go Universal travel adapter product image

When traveling abroad it’s critical to be prepared for other power voltages and non-USA electrical outlets. A universal travel adapter set is something I’ve relied on many times. The Pac2Go with outlet adapters and USB charger ports is a great example of one I recommend. Using a fan without an adapter could destroy it or even cause a fire! This particular model in an amazing 192 countries!

I’ve traveled overseas quite a few times. Without a doubt, one of the best investments I’ve ever made was a universal travel adapter set with outlet adapters and a voltage converter.

Many countries have electrical outlets with different connector jacks that won’t work with American power plugs. Additionally, some countries I’ve been to have 220V (not 120V) power which can destroy your fan, a phone charger, or any electrical devices.

They could potentially even cause a fire!

Be ready to power a fan or other small electrical devices. Do a little research before you go to be sure you can power your small electronics to avoid a tremendous amount of inconvenience.

I’ve learned the hard way that in many areas of the world it’s very difficult to find special power adapters for some of the devices you bring from back home.

The SkyGenius fan includes a rechargeable battery and USB cable for powering the fan or charging the battery. What’s especially great about this model is how you can adjust it for airflow perfectly where you need it. The swivel head is easy to use and works great.

One of my biggest reasons for recommending this little winner is how great the design is. The fan cage can be rotated to any position you need for cooling or white noise use.

5. Honeywell HTF090B Turbo – Compact and convenient with 3 power options

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo folding fanThe No products found. is a special little model that got my attention.

I’m already a big Honeywell fan as I’ve tested many of their air quality products. They’re some of the best I’ve owned and tested. This cool little Turbo model is no different.

It’s a single-speed fan with simple operation that folds very neatly out of the way. At 4.7 x 2.28 x 6.4 inches, it’s really small but can cool efficiently and create great white noise you’ll like.

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo On the Go portable fan side and rear viewsThe Turbo travel fan easily unfolds into the position you need after travel. A power jack on the rear allows powering it from USB power using the included cable. For battery power, 4 x AA batteries can be used (not included).

Two great power options are available: USB power (using the included cable) or 4 AA batteries if you need cable-free power.

Thanks to the DC motor design it helps reduce energy waste and can be power by the batteries more efficiently for extended battery length.

Not only that, but the base it folds into can also double as a carrying handle for your convenience.

PROS:
  • Battery powered (4 x AA)
  • USB power option (cable included)
  • Super compact
  • Smart folding design
  • Simple on-off control
  • Clear, helpful instructions
  • High airflow despite small size
  • Nice white noise production for its class
  • Great price and build quality
  • Excellent buyer reviews
CONS:
  • Single speed only
  • No AC-USB power adapter included
  • Batteries not included
  • Cannot swivel fan horizontally

Undoubtedly, the Turbo on the Go fan is one of the most compact and easy-to-use travel fans you’ll find.

If you’re on a budget but want a well-made mini fan for traveling and still enjoying white noise, it’s an excellent choice.

Don’t just take my word for it – No products found.

The 5 Best White Noise Machines For Snoring + How They Work

Best white noise machine for snoring featured image

Having problems sleeping because of snoring? Trust me, I know how it feels to have difficulty getting real rest. I’m a light sleeper and waken up easily because of sounds – including snoring!

Fortunately there’s a good solution: using a white noise machine. The problem is that finding the best white noise machine for snoring can be a bit tough if you don’t know what to look for.

I’d love to help! I’ve got 5 great models with brief reviews and information listed below. Additionally, I’ve provided lots of good information to help you understand how they work.

Contents

What is white noise?

White noise graph image example

Image showing how white noise can be represented on a graph. It’s shown as volume vs audio frequency, in which the name “white noise” is used to describe audio generated with equal volume at every point over the entire audible range. In other words, it’s noise generated to cover the whole range of sounds your ears can hear.

The concept of white noise is an interesting one and a true blessing for those who need relief for sleep problems caused by others. However, the name itself is often confused a bit with other types of sound.

For the purpose of getting relief from snoring and other outside sounds that interrupt your sleep, here’s what you need to know: white noise is the production of the full range of sound frequencies ears can hear. It provides a means of covering up – and effectively eliminating – bothersome noises.

A lot of the noises you hear every day such as the human voice, music, and birds only occur in a few portions of the range you can hear. White noise is different from music, for example, because it covers the entire range of sound frequencies.

White noise is often used in many places like baby nurseries and sometimes hotel rooms. Some people who have difficulty sleeping like me travel with noise machines in order to ensure they can rest undisturbed.

Note: The term “white noise” is a technical one as I described here. There are other types of noise production such as brown and pink as well. The “white” noise is often used interchangeably with the others sometimes, so be aware.

While technically not correct to do so, it’s because brown noise can also be used to block outside sounds.

Where are white noise machines used?

Image of a white noise machine on desk

I’ve been to many places in my life where noises kept me from getting a peaceful rest or even having a moment to relax undisturbed. Because of my experiences, I can tell you how incredibly helpful these little devices can be.

Noise machines are typically used in a number of situations:

  • In hotel rooms to block water pipe, traffic, A/C, or neighbor noise
  • Therapy offices or rooms
  • Baby sleep rooms
  • Study rooms/personal rooms for study
  • Bedrooms as a sleep aid
  • Business offices

You won’t find “hard and fast” rules for when or where they should be used. Just anywhere that you need one is a great use!

Any time or anywhere you need to mask outside noises (especially when someone is snoring) that disturb your concentration or rest you’ll need one. I’ve seen them used in therapy offices where private rooms are used for counseling sessions.

In that environment, multiple noise machines are used to provide a calm, relaxed state for the most effective therapist-counselor sessions.

Sounds such as the human voice (people talking and laughing), snoring, a television, loud music, and much more have a way of affecting our mood and emotional state.

It’s not just that outside noise makes it harder to rest or enjoy your quiet time at home, but also it can induce stress and ruin your productivity and concentration.

How do noise machines work?

How to block outside sounds white noise diagram

Noise machines are so helpful because they use sound to “mask” (cover) and effective block sound so that we won’t hear it. They produce a huge range of sounds in the form of white noise capable of blocking the huge variety of sources that can disturb you.

As long as the outside noise levels are close to the same or less than the volume put out by the machine, they won’t be heard. They’re a great way to finally get reliable sleep.

White noise machines don’t actually remove those bothersome sounds that we all find terrible. However, to our brains, it’s as if they don’t exist. Noise machines work by effectively eliminating them.

Our brains can’t pick out separate noises when a wide variety are mixed together – there’s simply too much information to process when it’s all received at once. For example, have you ever tried listening to 2 music tracks at the same time? It’s incredibly difficult to focus on just one. The principal is the same.

To put in simple terms, white noise machines mask, or cover up, disturbing sounds so that we will never notice them. As long as the volume of the noise source is about the same (or less) than that put out by the machine, you’ll never even know the noises are happening!

Your brain will never detect them and therefore you won’t wake up, be distracted, or be irritated by them any longer.

Snoring is one of the more difficult types of sound to block so it’s especially important to pick an effective model.

How they create background white noise

Sound machines generate helpful white noise by one of 2 methods:

  1. Electromechanical parts
  2. Solid-state electronics and a speaker

Electromechanical noise machines are some of the oldest and easiest to use products. They work by using a type of fan with blades powered by a small electric motor to spin, move air, and create sound.

Products using electronics use integrated circuits (ICs) and various other components that drive a speaker and generate noise artificially. Many are also capable of mimicking other kinds of sounds like electric fans or rain. They also provide more control over volume levels as well.

Both types have a number of pros and cons: while electromechanical types are very reliable and extremely simple to use, they draw more electricity and have limited features.

In contrast, electronic-based generators are not quite as simple to use and don’t produce a natural sound pattern (although well-designed models are very good).

In some cases, their sound production is less effective and they may have poor power-range sound blocking ability. Snoring and the human voice comes to mind in this range.

That’s why it’s essential to pick a proven and well-designed model.

How do I use a white noise machine?

White noise machine bedroom clip art

Manufacturers recommend placing a noise machine not immediately next to your bed but several feet away. Optimally, you’ll place it in a location closer to where the noise enters the room. That was (located further from you) you’re able to have the volume set higher than you would immediately next to you. In some cases, additional machines may be needed.

There are only a few steps in setting up a noise machine as they’re generally very easy to use. Ideally, you’ll place it in a good location away from your bed at least several feet, and higher off of the floor if possible.

This is helpful for 2 reasons:

  1. You’ll need to adjust the volume to block snoring sounds you’re hearing. If the machine is located too close to your bed you’re much more likely to turn the volume down significantly which will affect its performance.
  2. If placed on the floor, sounds may potentially enter more easily than if it were located on a desk or table for above the floor. Consider where you actually hear them entering the room.

Setting up a noise machine only requires a few steps: adjust the volume as needed to a comfortable level that can block snoring and choose your prefer sound type or sound tone (if applicable) that works well to eliminate snoring.

Desks, tables, or nightstands (in other parts of the room) are great locations for them. While you can use yours very close to your bed if you feel it’s necessary, it’s not ideal.

Locating a noise machine a least 3 feet away is ideal and gives it the opportunity to cover more of the room.

How many noise machines do I need?

Marpac, manufacturer of the popular Dohm Class white noise machine, recommends one for roughly every 300 square feet. That’s about a 10 foot x 30 foot room, for example.

In some cases, you might need to buy a 2nd one if you’re having especially troublesome noise you’re dealing with.

2 units can be placed in different locations in order to provide better sound coverage as well as a bit more volume that one unit alone can.

4. Avantek White Noise Basic – An affordable way to get snoring relief that works

Avantek white noise machine basic black model image

The Avantek White Noise Basic has a good combination of performance, features, and definitely affordability too. If your budget is $50 and below, it’s one I strongly suggest you consider.

Volume controls are some of the most flexible of any noise machine sold to with 30 increments available. The Avantek is also one of the most powerful with a whopping 115dB of maximum volume available.

One feature I found very cool is the settings memory. The next time the unit is powered off then back on, it will recall the last settings used and will start back up where you left off last time. No need to fumble around and adjust it all over again!

Avantek white noise machine basic white model image

Prefer a different color? The Avantek Basic is sold in a more traditional-looking white model as well. The Basic is really easy to use and features simple controls. The design reduces product cost while also allowing more options than some other similarly-priced competitors.

The great-looking satin black finish is accentuated with a blue ring on the top of the unit and sets it apart from other boring brands. However, if that style isn’t a good fit for you, don’t worry. A more conservative white version is available, too.

The pushbutton controls are really simple to use and greatly remind me of an MP3 player. Use the volume up/down buttons to adjust the sound level and change sounds quickly using the track forward/back buttons. Very easy to get used to!

Big Red Rooster BRRC107 sound machine image 1

Got a tight budget but need relief from bothersome snoring noise? The Big Red Rooster BRRC107 is a great option you should seriously consider.

The BRRC107 model includes 6 pleasant background sounds:

Even though it’s inexpensive (often priced at $30 and below) it even features a wonderful auto-off timer with 15, 30, and 60 minute settings.

Another great feature is the additional power source option that’s wonderful for travel. When not using it with included AC power adapter at home, you can use 3 AA batteries for sound relief anywhere! That’s fantastic for when a power outage occurs but you still want to be able to sleep in peace.

Although not all sounds are ideal for blocking out snoring. Instead, when relaxation or study time comes the nature sounds are a great way to make the most of your leisure time.

Big Red Rooster BRRC107 sound machine image 2
Controls are simple to use and clearly labeled. Volume up and down buttons are conveniently located on the front and top of the unit along with the power on/off button and timer selection indicators. The sound isn’t quite as good as some of the more expensive models, but still good nonetheless.

In my opinion, it’s a good choice for those who need a lower-cost solution. It would have been nice to see timer options above 60 minutes, but at this price, it’s hard to complain considering the great value.

  • Small size
  • Simple & clear push button controls

The Best White Noise Machines For Therapy Offices – 5 Must-See Models

Best white noise machine for therapy offices featured image

Without a doubt, therapy offices should be a comfortable place of focus where the therapist and patient are able to communicate without distraction. Masking outside noises, voices, and other sounds are often hard to do.

That’s where white noise machines can really help.

As I have friends who are therapists, I’ve been fortunate enough to see firsthand just how helpful they are. In this post, I’ll help you pick the best white noise machine for your therapy office.

Included below are 5 fantastic models with short reviews and details to know before buying. There’s also some great basic information as well as tips regarding placement and how many you’ll need.

Contents

What is white noise?

White noise graph image example

Above: a graph showing what white noise my look like on a graph of volume vs audio frequency. The term “white noise” is used in several different areas of science. Everything from electrical signals to audio production and testing. To most people, however, it describes the production of sound with equal volume over the entire audio spectrum your ears can hear. Because of that, it’s very useful for “masking”, or covering up, distracting sounds.

White noise is a very interesting subject, but one that’s often confused or mislabeled a bit.

For the purpose of virtually eliminating distracting sounds and providing a more effective therapy environment, here’s what you need to know: white noise is the full range production of sound frequencies capable of covering up bothersome outside noises.

Unlike common sounds you hear every day such as the human voice, music, and so forth, it covers nearly the entire range of sounds the human ear can hear, rather than only a small part of it.

I’ve seen how well it works inside a local therapist’s office where several are used in the main hallway between office doors. The effect was soft, calming, and it added a sense of relaxation to the environment as well.

Note that people often use the term “white noise” interchangeably when describing other sound types like brown noise for example. For all practical purposes that’s not an issue.

What are white noise machines used for?

LectroFan white noise machine image

As I’m a light sleeper myself (and have had some rather terrible experiences in noisy hotels) I’ve learned how helpful these devices can be.

White noise machines are generally used for a few basic situations;

  • Business offices
  • Therapy offices
  • Baby sleep rooms
  • Study rooms/personal rooms for study
  • Bedrooms as a sleep aid
  • Hotel rooms to block adjacent noise

There aren’t any real hard and fixed uses for them – you can use them just about anywhere there’s a need to mask out environmental, office, or outside sounds that interrupt concentration and relaxation.

Outside sounds have a way of triggering thoughts, feelings, and potentially affecting the mood and emotional state. That’s especially negative when clients are attending therapy sessions.

Note that it’s recommended to place a noise machine several feet away (or more) in order to work well for blocking noise in a room. They’re generally not used immediately near a bed or patient’s couch or chair, for example.

How does a white noise machine work?

How to block outside sounds white noise diagram

White noise machines produce noise over a wide range of audio frequencies that cover – and effectively block – sounds that distract from therapy sessions. As long as the outside sound is equal to or less than the white noise produced by the machine, the noise will no longer be heard. It’s a very effective way to provide a calm, anxiety-free environment in your office.

White noise machines don’t actually remove outside bothersome sounds. However, they do effectively eliminate them.

The human brain, in most cases, cannot discern a mixed variety of sounds as there’s too much information to process when received all at once Think of listening to 3 radios playing at the same time. Can you distinguish each individual radio? No, we can’t. The same principle applies to noise machines.

Accordingly, white noise machines mask, or cover up, outside sounds like the human voice, traffic and cars, and so on.

As long as the volume of the noise in question is about the same as that of the white noise machine it won’t be “heard” (noticed) by the brain and attention won’t be drawn to it.

For clients in a therapy room, this means there are no outside sound elements to potentially trigger thought processes, anxiety, or a general loss of focus from the therapist-client relationship.

How they generate sound

Electromechanical vs electronic white noise machines comparison image

Most sound machines generate their soothing sounds in one of two ways:

  1. Electromechanical generation
  2. Using solid-state electronics and speakers

Electromechanical designs are some of the oldest and easiest to use models. Most consist of a type of fan with blades and an electric motor that spins to create airflow and sounds.

Electronic models use integrated circuit components to generate a noise pattern (or patterns). They often have additional options like various sound types, volume controls, and so forth.

Both have pros and cons: while electromechanical devices are very reliable and extremely simple to use, they draw a bit more power than electronic types.

Electronic sound generators are a bit less simple to use and use an artificially generated noise pattern. In some cases, their sound production is less effective and they have poor bass sound blocking ability (like the human voice, for example).

How many white noise machines do I need?

White noise machine hallway placement diagram

One suggested use I’ve seen used in a therapy office is placing the white noise machines in the hallway. In this idea, the machines (2 for about every 3 offices or so) are placed in a staggered fashion on opposite sides of the hallway. Otherwise, consider getting one for each office, placed off to the side and not directly near the therapist or client chairs.

You’ll need to consider the number of offices in the office suite when purchasing white noise machines.

Marpac, a major manufacturer of some of the most popular ones, suggests one machine per roughly every 300 square feet of room size (about a 10 x 30 foot room).

However, they can also be placed outside of the office in the hallway depending upon your office suite’s floor plan. I’ve seen them placed in the hallway in between offices rather than in the offices themselves. In that case, the therapists used on one machine on each side for about every 3 office doors, with about 4 used total.

So I’d recommend:

  • One machine per individual room OR
  • 2 per hallway side, for every 3 rooms, if placed in the hallway

For very small offices about 2 should work well outside your therapy rooms.

Note that these are general guidelines, to begin with, and the effectiveness of any white noise machine varies a lot based upon the volume and type of noises you’re dealing with.

Detailed reviews and pros/cons

1. Adaptive Sound Technologies LectroFan – A feature-packed advanced electronic sound generator.

Best white noise machine for therapy office editors choice image
The LectroFan from Adaptive Sound Technologies brings you a wide range of features using modern electronics and acoustical technology.

This great little unit is a huge seller with excellent buyer reviews. The basic, simple design reflects how easy it is to operate as well.

A total of 20 relaxing and noise masking sounds can be produced: 10 fan sounds and 10 ambient noise variations (including white noise, pink noise, and brown noise).

Lots of great sound options!

Some of the fan sounds include that of a box fan, oscillating fan, and low-tone mellow fan. The ambient noise variations like “tan”, “coral”, and “pure white” are a pleasant variation of background sounds to block unwanted sources of noise.

Not only that, but it can be powered by either a USB supply both or United States 120V power outlets (US power model) as well as UK/European Union voltage (global power model).

There’s a 60-minute timer available as well as a push-button volume control to adjust as needed. There are no internal moving parts to fail and it produces quality sound with the high-fidelity speaker design used.

PROS:
  • 10 simulated fan sounds
  • 10 ambient sounds
  • Low power consumption
  • AC or USB power
  • Good volume adjustment control
  • 60 minute timer
  • High-fidelity speaker design
  • No internal moving parts
  • Compact and lightweight
CONS:
  • Timer is not adjustable (60 minutes only)
  • Tan color not available
  • Slightly more complex to use
  • No nature sounds like ocean, rain, or wind

I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a highly flexible and modern white noise generator. It’s also one of the best-selling units today and has amazing reviews over at Amazon.

2. Marpac Dohm Classic – Simple to use. Classic technology for natural, soothing white noise.

Marpac Dohm Classic white noise machine 1I’m a prior owner of one of the most popular and well-reviewed white noise machines – the Marpac Dohm Classic.

With its classic design originating from decades ago, it was redesigned over the years but the fundamentals are still the same: an easy-to-use white noise machine with a motor-based sound generator.

The Classic features a 2 level volume control and no complicated controls to fuss with.

Just switch it to one of the speeds available using the 2-position switch and enjoy a calm, distraction-free environment.

Marpac Dohm Classic blackThe Marpac Dohm Classic features a simple but modern-looking design. It’s also available in black and tan as well.

Not only that, but you can adjust the sound and tone of the noise produced by simply rotating the outside shell. Doing so affects airflow from it, shaping the sound produced to better fit your needs and helps you find what’s more pleasant for you, too.

PROS:
  • Extremely easy to use
  • Available in 3 colors: white, black, tan
  • Many happy buyers
  • Effective and natural white noise produced
  • 2 volumes available (2 speed positions)
  • Adjustable sound control
  • Classic, simple, and reliable design
  • 1 year warranty
  • Great customer service from Marpac
CONS:
  • No variable volume – 2 positions only
  • Cannot produce simulated nature sound like some electronic models
  • No timer or auto-off features

As one of the easiest to use white noise machines it’s an excellent choice. I recommend you head over to find out more today at Amazon.

3. Snooz White Noise Sound Machine – A great combination of modern and classic technology.

Snooz white noise machine image 1The Snooz white noise machine is a well-designed little device that provides the best of both worlds: natural sound production (instead of simulated) for wonderful white noise, but with the benefits of modern technology too.

The brushless motor-driven internal fan provides years of trouble-free sound production. There are 10 volume settings available and similar to the Marpac Dohm product, you can customize the tone of the sound by simply rotating the outer body.

Want to customize the sound? Just rotate the outer body and change it as you like. Top-mounted touch controls are available and clearly marked for hassle-free operation.

The Snooz features great volume (a quiet 46db up to a high 87dB) which exceeds the performance of many other models. It’s one of the best-rated for masking irritating and bothersome sounds around you.

The Bluetooth interface allows easy control of all major functions via your iPhone or Android device.

4. Avantek White Noise Basic – An affordable combination of performance, features, and ease of use.

The Avantek White Noise Basic is a great compromise between performance, features, and especially cost. If you’re looking to spend $50 and below, it’s definitely well worth considering.

With an adjustable volume you can set in increments of 30 steps it provides up to a whopping 115dB of volume. That’s much higher than the competition.

Additionally, the memory feature means it retains the last settings and will start back up where you left off when turning it on next time – no need to fumble around with the settings every time.

Avantek white noise machine basic white model image
Not interested in the black model? The Avantek Basic is also available in a more conservative-looking white model as well. The Basic is both easy to use and features simple controls that reduce cost while allowing more options than other models.

A sharp-looking satin black finish with a blue trim ring on time sets is apart from the boring style of other brands. However, if that’s not a good fit for your office, there’s a more modest white version available as well.

The controls are very simple to use – use the volume up/down and track forward/back to change the loudness or current sound option just like an MP3 player. Very easy, and very intuitive!

A total of 20 soothing sounds are available to help provide your clients with a calm, stress-free environment:

  • 6 white noise sounds

Use the auto-off timer to have it shut off automatically or use the continuous play feature for uninterrupted and clear background sounds all day long.

  • Volume adjustment up/down buttons
  • Auto-off timer: 1-7 hours

  • 2 color choices (black, white)
  • AC power or USB power inputs
  • Soft-fade volume decrease at end of timer

  • Auto-off timer LED indicator lights (indicates hour selection)

CONS:
  • 7-hour auto-off timer is a bit short for typical sleep
  • No smartphone control
  • Can’t adjust sound tones – plays fixed sound types
  • No headphone jack
  • No touch controls
  • Ambient sound options only available in the Pro model

Big Red Rooster BRRC107 sound machine image 1

Is your office budget a bit tight, but you still need the best you can get for your therapy sessions? The Big Red Rooster BRRC107 may be just what you need.

The BRRC107 features 6 different background sounds:

  • Rain
  • Gentle brook
  • Thunder
  • White noise
  • Ocean sounds
  • Summer night

Additionally, while it’s not expensive, there’s also a very helpful auto-off time with settings for 15, 30, or 60 minutes.

One unique feature is the power source option – while it can be powered by the standard AC adapter (included) you can also use 3 AA batteries when no AC power source is available. It’s great for travel!

While not all sounds are optimal for a therapist-client situation, the white noise, brook, and rain sound options are great choices for most situations.

The controls are clear and easy to use – including the simple and direct volume up/down controls as well. Sound quality isn’t quite as good as the other models I’ve listed, but that’s a compromise that works well for some buyers.

Editor’s choice: the best white noise machine for therapy offices

Best white noise machine for therapy office editors choice image
Overall, the LectroFan from Advanced Sound Technologies is my top recommendation for a white noise machine for therapy sessions.

It’s a wonderful compromise between performance, features, and price. It’s also lightweight and easy to travel with if needed.

Not only that, but there are thousands of happy buyer reviews. When compared to other products in the same price range (near $50 or so), it’s very clear the LectroFan is a better value.

While I would have preferred more volume level options or a smartphone control option, those are minor complaints when you look at all you get. It’s a great sounding unit I’ve enjoyed testing. I’m confident it will bring a more calm and productive environment for both you and your clients.

Don’t hesitate to see the outstanding reviews and learn why it's a best seller at Amazon.
