What is white noise?

White noise graph image exampleGraph showing white noise and how it works in terms of sound. The term “white noise” describes a sound source that produces audio noise throughout the entire range of human hearing. This is very important as I’ll explain later.

White noise is an interesting topic! Of course, we’re most concerned about how it can give us relief for lots of problems caused by distracting outside sounds.

Technically speaking, white noise is a range of noise audio that covers the full range of sound frequencies your ears can hear. It is used to mask – or cover up and block – bothersome sounds.

Many of the sounds you hear every day and that would distract you occur in a few portions of the range of human hearing. White noise is very different from music because it’s intended to cover the entire audio range of human hearing (about 20 Hertz to 20 Kilohertz).

By contrast, music for example only has portions of sound from a singer, synthesizers, and so on that occur in a few areas of the range your ears can hear.

People respond well naturally to soothing sounds like it and other sources of pleasing audio, so it can also help you relax and enter a lower-stress and more focused state, too.

Where is white noise used?

It’s often used in places like baby nurseries, hotel rooms, therapy offices, and of course bedrooms. People who have difficulty sleeping while traveling (like me) often carry a small white noise machine to help.

Just about anywhere you need relief from distractions white noise is extremely helpful.

How white noise blocks soundsHow how white noise blocks sounds box fan diagram

Box sounds produce white noise that works to block out bothersome sounds by what’s called masking. This simply means they cover up audio that is equal to or below the volume of the noise generated by a box fan. When sounds are covered up sufficiently, your brain doesn’t process them or spend any time being distracted by them. They’re effectively eliminated that way.

The noise produced by a box fan doesn’t actually remove sounds that bother you – they help by a process called masking.

That simply means the noise a fan produces covers up – or “masks” – those distracting outside sounds. However, to our brain, it’s as if they don’t even exist at all. Box fans effectively eliminate troublesome sources of sound by keeping our brains from being able to detect and react to them.

The human brain can’t pick out separate noises when there are many mixed together. There’s simply too much information to process, and when sounds become combined together they can’t be separated.

For example, try listening to 2 or 3 music sources at once. After a certain point, it’s impossible to pick apart the individual instruments and so on. That principal is how masking works.

Since your brain will never hear them (as long as they’re not louder than the white noise) it’s like they don’t exist!

Note: Technically speaking, box fans actually don’t produce white noise but produce “brown noise.” People tend to use the term “white noise” interchangeably with brown noise which is similar but different in how the upper range of frequencies is produced.

However, that’s just a trivial detail to know.

How box fans make white noise

How box fans produce white noise diagram

Box fans create noise from a combination of sources that result in a soothing and calming noise. The movement of air from the input (suction) side of the fan, the fan motor itself, the air disturbances at the blades, and the air blowing from the front side combine to mask outside distractions.

Box fans are accidentally good producers of white noise. I say that because they’re not designed to do so…it’s a by-product of how they work.

Box fans have several factors and sources of noise that combine to result in a soothing white noise:

  • The rush of air on the input (suction) side
  • The electric motor’s vibration and hum it produces
  • The fan blade noise due to rapidly turning and moving air
  • Air forced out of the front side which blows forcefully in the room

To our ears this appears as a mixed “white noise” effect that’s rhythmic, calming, and helpful for blocking many of the sources of sound that make studying, relaxing, sleeping, and life in general much harder.

Because of their design, they tend to vibrate a bit which also lends itself to affect their sound output as well. The alternating current (AC) motor of a fan often produces a gentle hum reflective of its 60 Hertz power source (or 50 Hertz for some countries outside the USA).

Which way do you put a fan in the window?

Which way to put a fan in window diagram

There isn’t really a “best” way to place a box fan in a window. This is due to the physics of gas (air) movement. A fan in a window creates air pressure (fresh air moving in) which is offset by an equal and opposite air pressure (old air moving out). To get a room filled with fresh air more quickly, however, it’s best to have at least 1 more window open. That allows air to circulate more rapidly and more efficiently.

For the most part, it doesn’t matter a lot which way you place a box fan in a window. However, there are a few ways to use it depending on what you need.

That’s because of the laws of physics involved: airflow in = airflow out. In other words, the air movement a fan brings in will be equal to the air leaving.

Here are my general guidelines you may find helpful:

1. If you have only 1 window in a room, I recommend you place the fan facing in.

This allows the fan to force air into the room and push back against the window. In some situations it will help keep the fan upright.

You’ll still have air circulate. However, it will take much longer than having another window open as the window opening size will be more limited (air circulation will be restricted and the old air won’t be able to escape as easily).

2. If you have 2 or more windows, leave at least 1 open for maximum cooling and air circulation.

With at least one additional window open you can have great airflow and cooling within a room. That’s because a room with only one window open (and with the fan placed in the same window) is forcing air against more pressure as the air can’t flow easily back outside.

When a second or third window is open the resistance to the fan’s air pressure is removed and air can escape easily at the same rate it came in.

Ultimately, in either case, I recommend you place a fan in the window facing inward (air blowing INTO the room). That’s because:

  • It may help hold the fan in the window due to the backpressure
  • Box fans sometimes produce more noise on the output side due to the fan blades facing forward.

It’s a relatively minor difference but in my experience one that works best.

A front mounted 3-position dial makes it easy to set the fan to one of 3 speeds regardless of whether it’s used in a window or floor.

It’s a unique design and a refreshing, affordable what to get white noise anywhere you need it. One drawback to be aware of is that there’s no carrying handle included like the other models I’ve mentioned.

One cool advantage is that the base supports can be removed for easy window use. The top of the fan is free from obstructions that make it hard to close a window on.

PROS:
  • High airflow rate
  • Safety-fused power plug
  • Base supports work well and easy to install
  • Great for window use – no obstructions
  • Power cord storage area
  • Good white noise production

Lasko 3720 Weather Shield box fan front image
I absolutely love using box fans in my window. The cooling effect and fresh air I enjoy simply can’t be beaten. However, when the rain comes it’s a huge inconvenience to stop what I’m doing and take it out of the window every time.

The Lasko Model 3270 Weather Shield Performance fan solves that problem as well as being a great performer that you don’t want to pass up.

It also produces some of the best and smoothest white noise I’ve heard from a box fan.

Lasko 3720 Weather Shield box fan in window

The Lasko Weather Shield #3720 looks great and works really well in windows…including yours. Classic style and operation mean hassle-free use. The design protects the electric motor in case of rain while in the window – no more having to pull a fan out and losing your wonderful fresh air and background fan noise!

What’s unique about the Weather Shield is the design Lasko built in. In case of light rain, the motor is protected from exposure to water by a weather shield for worry-free operation.

3 quiet fan speeds provide excellent airflow and cooling. Despite being quiet enough to avoid distracting you, the 3720 still provides enough volume to block out troublesome and annoying sounds.

t’s a wonderful and very calming fan I’ve enjoyed testing myself.

Lasko 3720 box fan features zoomed image

(Left) The unique Wind Ring design on the grill helps focus air movement and increase performance by enhancing air speed. (Right) A great-looking and simple rotary control makes operation easy. The top-mounted carry handle lets you move the fan easily as well.

Additionally, the front grill has a unique Wind Ring design which helps maximize fan performance by directing air movement for optimal airspeed. It’s a cool design touch I haven’t seen in most competitor’s products.

The top-mounted rotary control works well and in my opinion, is a nice touch. It’s reliable and the “feel” is very good as well.

No complaints about the handle – it’s easy to use and makes positioning the fan a breeze, too. It’s energy-efficient thanks to the Save-Smart design. You can use it as much as you like for less than 2 cents per hour!

Like other Lasko models, a fused safety plug is included in the power cord to prevent potential hazards due to electrical shorts or overloads.

Rounding out all the wonderful features is a 2 year limited warranty.

PROS:
  • Weather resistant (can leave in window)
  • 3 speed operation

How does white noise from a fan help?

What is white noise?

White noise is the term used to describe a sound production that’s made up of all frequencies in the audio band (the range you can hear) at equal levels.

“White” is used to describe this particular type while others such as brown and pink exist and describe similar noise but with different acoustical levels in certain frequency ranges.

How white noise helps

How how white noise blocks sounds box fan diagram

White noise helps by “masking” bothersome noise and creating a more relaxed and distraction-free environment for. Sounds you otherwise would hear are “covered” (masked) by the sound your fan generates, resulting in it effectively eliminating it. As long as the outside sound is of an equal or lesser volume than the white noise it can be blocked.

Fans can improve your quality of life using the principle of sound masking. This means that the noise it generates simple “covers”, or masks, the sounds that cause you problems and make sleeping or concentrating more difficult.

In reality, the fan isn’t actually removing outside sounds – but for all practical purposes, our brains think it’s gone.

This is because when many sounds are combined together well (especially with noise!) our brains can’t “hear” the distractions anymore.

The result is that as long as the bothersome outside sounds aren’t able to exceed the white noise level we no longer hear them.

Sleep like a baby!

Image of a woman sleeping comfortably

It’s a well-known fact that infants and children are able to sleep more readily with gentle sounds. For example, dishwashers, washing machines, and other sources have a pretty steady and rhythmic “pattern” that affects our brains in a pleasant way.

The psycho-acoustical effect of a soothing noise causes a pleasing and focused state in both many people’s minds and bodies. The result is better sleep as well as better concentration.

It’s especially helpful to have a fan when you travel for many adults or children sleeping in a new environment can be tough. You’re not accustomed to your surroundings and haven’t had time to adapt.

New environments mean new nuances and small sounds you’re no used to which can hurt your quality of sleep. I speak from personal experience!

How fans make white noise

How box fans produce white noise diagram

“White noise”, the soothing sound produced by many fans, is produced by a number of things that happen when a fan is running. It’s generally caused by the air turbulence created by the blades but often contains the sound of the fan motor, too. When a fan run runs, the air is drawn from the rear and forced out the front which causes noise the noise.

Fans (especially traditional ones like box fans) are an easy-to-use and economical source of noise to cover sounds, reduce stress after a hard day, and promote better sleep.

The funny thing is that fans aren’t intentionally designed to make noise! It’s a wonderful side effect of how they work.

There are several factors involved which result in that soothing noise we love:

  • Air passing by the surfaces of the fan’s body
  • The rush of air on the input (suction) and output (forward) sides
  • Fan blades spinning through and disturbing the air
  • Turbulence caused by the nearby air being disturbed due to blowing
  • The gentle humming and operation of the motor itself

These factors combine to produce the cumulative effect as a “white noise” our ears and then brain receive. The result is the rhythmic, calming, and most of all helpful sound.

As I described, this white noise is used to “mask, or cover, and effectively eliminate bothersome sounds as far as our brains are concerned.

Because of how fan work, they often have a tendency to vibrate on a very small scale which also contributes to a gentle undertone you’ll enjoy. Both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC, like from USB power or batteries) have sound characteristics you’ll hear without realizing it.

Fan options to shop for

Clip art man shopping online at desk silhouetteThere are many features to look for and consider before purchasing a fan that typically don’t apply for standard home fans.

For example:

  • Power sources: Will an electrical outlet or USB power be available? Do you need cordless (battery) power?
  • Fan speeds: Will a simple single-speed fan be ok or are more important to you?
  • Folding/compact size: Is a slightly large fan ok or is space really tight?
  • Price
  • Warranty length
  • Positioning or swivel features

Be sure to give these a thought when shopping. However, you can’t go wrong with the products I’ve researched, tested, and that I recommend below.

Important foreign travel fan tips

Pac2Go Universal travel adapter product image

When traveling abroad it’s critical to be prepared for other power voltages and non-USA electrical outlets. A universal travel adapter set is something I’ve relied on many times. The Pac2Go with outlet adapters and USB charger ports is a great example of one I recommend. Using a fan without an adapter could destroy it or even cause a fire! This particular model in an amazing 192 countries!

I’ve traveled overseas quite a few times. Without a doubt, one of the best investments I’ve ever made was a universal travel adapter set with outlet adapters and a voltage converter.

Many countries have electrical outlets with different connector jacks that won’t work with American power plugs. Additionally, some countries I’ve been to have 220V (not 120V) power which can destroy your fan, a phone charger, or any electrical devices.

They could potentially even cause a fire!

Be ready to power a fan or other small electrical devices. Do a little research before you go to be sure you can power your small electronics to avoid a tremendous amount of inconvenience.

I’ve learned the hard way that in many areas of the world it’s very difficult to find special power adapters for some of the devices you bring from back home.

4. SkyGenius rechargeable clip-on – It goes and provides white noise where others can’t

SkyGenius clip-on fan frontWhat if I told you it you could get white noise anywhere and get a fan that is

  • Cheap
  • Battery and USB powered (no outlet needed!)
  • Rechargeable, and includes the battery
  • Can be used on a table or clip on to nearly anything

Sound impossible? It’s not. The SkyGenius battery powered clip-on mini fan is all of these things. It’s a fantastic choice for where other fans can’t go!

SkyGenius clip-on fan features image

The SkyGenius fan includes a rechargeable battery and USB cable for powering the fan or charging the battery. What’s especially great about this model is how you can adjust it for airflow perfectly where you need it. The swivel head is easy to use and works great.

One of my biggest reasons for recommending this little winner is how great the design is. The fan cage can be rotated to any position you need for cooling or white noise use.

There’s also an adjustable fan speed control on the rear. That’s a very unique – and rare – feature for a fan that’s priced so low.

SkyGenius clip-on fan desk use examples

The SkyGenius works great both with its clip feature or standing on its base. Don’t forget you can power it directly from any USB port!

But you’re not limited to using it only with the clip – the base is designed to work on any tabletop or desk just like any other small fan. It measures a mere 7.5 x 6 x 4 inches in size, so it’s an excellent choice for travel.

For having white noise you can literally take anywhere, it’s a slam dunk.

PROS:
  • Battery or USB power
  • Rechargeable battery and USB cables included
  • Adjustable fan speed
  • Clip-on feature works almost anywhere
  • Desk stand base
  • Swivel head w/ 360 degree rotation
  • Simple controls
  • Great price
  • Good buyer reviews
  • Small size
CONS:
  • Some buyers prefer fixed speed controls
  • No AC adapter included
  • Black only (no white available)
  • Can’t fold for storage

All-in-all, it’s one of the values in a travel fan for white noise anywhere. If you need the greatest in ease of use and portability, be sure to check it out.

User reviews are just as great as the fan itself! Head over to see the amazing feedback this best-selling fan has earned at Amazon.

5. Honeywell HTF090B Turbo – Compact and convenient with 3 power options

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo folding fanThe No products found. is a special little model that got my attention.

I’m already a big Honeywell fan as I’ve tested many of their air quality products. They’re some of the best I’ve owned and tested. This cool little Turbo model is no different.

It’s a single-speed fan with simple operation that folds very neatly out of the way. At 4.7 x 2.28 x 6.4 inches, it’s really small but can cool efficiently and create great white noise you’ll like.

Honeywell HTF090B Turbo On the Go portable fan side and rear viewsThe Turbo travel fan easily unfolds into the position you need after travel. A power jack on the rear allows powering it from USB power using the included cable. For battery power, 4 x AA batteries can be used (not included).

Two great power options are available: USB power (using the included cable) or 4 AA batteries if you need cable-free power.

Thanks to the DC motor design it helps reduce energy waste and can be power by the batteries more efficiently for extended battery length.

Not only that, but the base it folds into can also double as a carrying handle for your convenience.

PROS:
  • Battery powered (4 x AA)
  • USB power option (cable included)
  • Super compact
  • Smart folding design
  • Simple on-off control
  • Clear, helpful instructions
  • High airflow despite small size
  • Nice white noise production for its class
  • Great price and build quality
  • Excellent buyer reviews
CONS:
  • Single speed only
  • No AC-USB power adapter included
  • Batteries not included
  • Cannot swivel fan horizontally

Undoubtedly, the Turbo on the Go fan is one of the most compact and easy-to-use travel fans you’ll find.

If you’re on a budget but want a well-made mini fan for traveling and still enjoying white noise, it’s an excellent choice.

Don’t just take my word for it – No products found.

The Best Fans For College Dorms + Buyer’s Guide

Best fans for college forms featured image

Looking for the best fans for college dorms? While there are plenty of options to choose from, shopping can be a hassle and take hours!

Dorm rooms are limited on space and being in college often means you’re short on money. But don’t stress! You can sleep, study, and enjoy college life in comfort affordably.

To make things easier, I’ve put together a list of 5 of the greatest (and best-selling) fans for college dorms.

There’s also a helpful buyer’s guide below.

Contents

The best type of fans for college dorm rooms

College dorm rooms are small on space and are a bit of a challenge because of it. Why not make the most of the space you have?

When you’re sharing a limited amount of space with a roommate, buying just any fan isn’t practical. You’ll have to get something that works well and doesn’t take up too much of your precious space.

I recommend tower fans as they’re more space efficient than others. Unlike traditional fans, they’re a better fit and offer benefits others don’t.

They’re also great for making the room cooler and more comfortable – especially if you can’t control the air conditioner settings or if none is available.

What is a tower fan?

Tower fans vs box fans diagram

Unlike standard box or tabletop fans, tower fans have a unique design. They work using a tall, vertical placed cylindrical rotary fan assembly. This cylindrical fan rotates and blows air horizontally, forming a tall “wall” of air. While traditional fans are often inexpensive and work well when pointed directly at you, tower fans are better at distributing more air over a wider area. They’re often quieter as well.

Made up of a vertical design, tower fans are unique in that they don’t use a standard blade design like box, tabletop, or ceiling fans do. Basically they have a cylindrical-shaped fan assembly with curved blades that cover every portion of the fan’s center.

Tower fans work by using a vertical fan design driven by a motor to blow air in a tall, horizontal pattern. Unlike traditional fans, they don’t necessarily have to be positioned to blow directly at you to keep you cool.

The blades within the fan are more of a curved design that looks like a circular pattern if viewed from the top end portion.

Tower fans vs other types

Tower fans vs standard fans airflow comparison diagram

While standard fans like box and desktop models can give some room cooling, they typically don’t have the air coverage that tower fans do. For example, box fans have a fixed direction and must be turned exactly where needed. Desktop fans that oscillate have more area coverage, but still can’t cover as much area as a tower fan.

Although you can find many inexpensive fans that will cool small areas like a college dorm room a bit, tower fans are easier to use.

They’re also much nicer to use because of the many options they offer:

  • A smaller base means it’s easier to find a place for them
  • They use vertical space instead of horizontal space (more space-efficient)
  • Many produce less noise than other types of fans
  • Easy to move – many include a carrying handle
  • Can be placed near you for better cooling
  • Some offer more fan speeds (more flexible operation)
  • Many offer features like auto timers or remote control

Think of them as more advanced fans that use a better design resulting in better performance, advanced features, and taking up less valuable space.

Regardless of the features, the biggest advantage of a tower fan is how they cool a dorm room better than other fans thanks to their better airflow coverage.

How do tower fans cool your room?

How tower fans cool a room diagram

Tower fans are able to cool both you and your dorm room using the principle of convection. That is, they move air across surfaces and thanks to the physics of heat transfer, heat is removed from your body & room objects. That gives the feeling of cooling. They also do a good job of circulating air in a dorm room, too.

Earlier I mentioned how tower fans work by turning a cylinder-shaped fan assembly. The tall and vertical design they use creates a tall vertical stream of air blowing in a room which passes over both your body and room objects.

By doing so they cause you to feel cooler as they remove heat.

The scientific name for this principle is called forced convection. While it may sound fancy, in reality, it’s pretty simple!

Cooling by forced convention means fans force air across surfaces which transfers heat away from those surfaces. Convection means moving a liquid or gas (in this case air) to transfer heat energy.

Here’s a great example: most personal computers have a cooling fan which removes heat away from the hard-working central processor (CPU).

A well-designed fan with sufficient speed can circulate air throughout a room and keep it constantly moving for added comfort. This is especially true as most tower fans have an oscillation (side-to-side movement) function.

How they save money

Tower fan money saving badge imageOne fantastic benefit is the amount of money you’ll save by using a tower fan versus using an air conditioner (AC) unit.

While college dorms may have AC, often you won’t have the option to change settings to your preferred temperature. Most air conditioners also use a lot of electrical power as they have to power not only a fan but and also the compressor used to circulate refrigerant.

However, tower fans can work with up to an amazing 60% less power than an air conditioner!

Use alongside air conditioning

For added benefit, you can also use the fan to “boost” an existing AC unit’s cooling ability and cut power consumption. The fan will help redistribute cool air from the AC unit throughout the room, aiding in cooling even more.

Some people use both as they can turn up the temperature setting on the AC unit and reduce their electric bills during hot seasons.

Many of the models listed below also offer automatic shutoff timers so they can be left unattended and won’t run 24 hours a day.

Features to shop for

Tower fan remote control example

There are some excellent features available on quality tower fans you should be aware of before shopping. For example, a remote control is an excellent option! You can change fan settings without having to leave your desk or get out of bed at night.

While there are certainly many to choose from, you’ve got to be careful when shopping to get the best value for your dollar. (Be sure to check out my recommended product list for several smart choices.)

Some of the best features to look for are:

  • Remote control operation
  • Additional color or styles
  • An auto-off timer
  • Carrying handle
  • Dimmer controls
  • Electronic controls
  • Extra-quiet noise levels (like “sleep” mode)
  • Oscillation
  • Air cleaning features

You’ll definitely need to pay attention to buyer ratings as in my experience poorly designed fans are louder, less effective, and won’t give you the same cooling effect as lesser models.

It’s simply not worth it put a cheaper fan in a dorm room and then be miserable with the results!

Air cleaning features

Some models offer an air cleaning feature such as an ionizer to remove a small number of unwanted irritants or allergens from the air as the fan runs. While it’s a nice addition to have, I don’t recommend you make a buying decision based on this feature.

That’s because fans simply aren’t designed to act as efficient air cleaners the way a true air purifier can.

However, there are a few exceptions, like this wonderful oscillating Honeywell AirGenius 5 fan and air cleaner I reviewed.

Low-noise operation

Image of guy sleeping with quiet fan in dorm room

Some of the best brands offer much quieter operation than standard fans. As a matter of fact, some offer a “sleep mode” specifically for this reason. This way you can sleep at night without fan noise disturbing your much-needed rest.

Others offer a way to dim the control or indicator lights to avoid that very annoying light that may wake you up. As a light sleeper myself, this is something I really value!

You’d be surprised how easily your eyes can detect even dim lights in a dark room. One reason is the human eye is more sensitive to blue light which many modern electronics use.

Auto-off timers

An auto-off timer is a very convenient feature I really love. With it, you can set the fan to turn off automatically after a selected amount of time. It’s great for leaving it running while being out on errands or in class and not having to worry about turning the fan off.

The timer settings available vary from model to model.

Oscillation

Unlike standard fans, the oscillation feature is very common on tower fans.

With it turned on the fan will move side to side in a steady, slow fashion and distribute a wide and large amount of air in your room. It’s a very important feature!

Most within a range of about 60 to 90 degrees in width, depending on the particular product.

Product reviews and details

1. Lasko Wind Curve – A best-selling winner. Great for college dorms!

Lasko Wind Curve T42950 tower fan featured image

There’s little surprise the Lasko Wind Curve with fresh air ionizer is one of the most popular tower fans in the world. It’s a great one that people love, and priced below $100, it’s a great investment for your college dorm room

Lasko is a giant producer of some of the most popular fans you’ll find anywhere. Measuring a tall 42.5″ (108 cm) it makes great use of limited floor space.

It’s also one of the best-looking fans around and is available in 3 classy versions:

  1. Black with wood grain inset
  2. Matte silver and gray
  3. Gray with wood grain inset

Just place it where you have about 4 feet (1.2 m) from nearby walls or furniture for best performance. The oscillation function will produce a generous and wide area of airflow for great cooling and comfort. Your dorm room will fill with pleasant, refreshing air immediately.

Lasko Wind Curve control panel

The Wind Curve provides a simple control panel with LED indicator lights to show the operational status and timer selection. Electronic push button controls are easy-to-use and reliable, with a good “feel” you’ll like. Just push the fan button to rotate through 3 fan speeds. The timer button lets you set it and walk away. Touch the oscillation button to engage the wide-sweeping side to side motion.

It’s also a quiet one as well. Great for sleep time or when you need to focus and study without being disturbed. 3 fan speeds are available by touching the clearly labeled push button controls on top.

Want to set it and walk away? That’s easy! The handy auto-off timer allows you to choose from 1/2, 1, 2, or 4 hours of operation after which it turns itself off.

For added air quality, an optional ionizer feature is provided to reduce airborne contaminants in the room while the fan is running.

Lasko wind curve tower fan remote control
A sleek remote control (included) stores nicely on the rear of the unit when not in use. No need break your stride when studying or relaxing…just push a button and the fan changes settings.

PROS:
  • Great color and style options
  • Good performance and airflow
  • Quiet 3-speed operation
  • Remote control (includes batteries)
  • Remote stores on rear of unit
  • Oscillation feature
  • Good cooling performance
  • Reliable
  • Extremely popular and great buyer reviews
  • 1 year warranty
CONS:
  • More fan speeds would be nice
  • Air ionizer not a true air purifier
  • Might be too tall for some buyers (need 42″ inches)
  • Needs about 4 feet space from walls/furniture for optimal use

There are a few minor quibbles. I would have preferred more fan speed settings were available as well as more timer options. Overall, however, it’s one of the best available today.

The quality is excellent, it cools a room really well, and it’s great-looking, too. I definitely recommend to anyone who’s looking for one of the best. The included remote control works well and is especially great to have.

For these reasons, it gets our Editor’s Choice award as the top recommended tower fan for your money.

Stay cool with the best! Head over and find out why it's an incredibly popular seller at Amazon.

2. Honeywell QuietSet whole room tower fan – Advanced features, quiet cooling power, and affordable quality

Honeywell Quietset HYF290B tower fanThe sleek and advanced QuietSet 8-speed whole room tower fan features the same Honeywell design and performance quality I’ve reviewed in the past. During many of my tests, I’ve found their air purifiers and fans to be some of the best for your money.

The QuietSet proves once again that good design and quality components don’t have to cost a lot.

With it, you’ll get many of the same features as other tower fans listed here, with a few you won’t get…and that’s you’ll really love!

Standing at 40″ (101.6 cm) tall it looks great in any college dorm or office.

Honeywell QuietSet tower fan remote control image

Hit a button on the simple – and incredibly convenient – remote to change functions without having to stop what you’re doing. No need to interrupt your work or leisure time after a hard day! To avoid losing it, the remote stores neatly in the rear when not in use.

A nice little remote control is included, too. While it doesn’t allow more advanced operation like on the more expensive Lasko Wind Curve fan, it’s a great feature and lets you adjust comfort levels and fan speeds with zero hassle.

Turn it on, off, engage the oscillation function, or change fan speed levels from across your room. You get one of the largest fan speed ranges available as it provides 8 fan speeds to choose from.

The control panel is one of the best I’ve seen on any tower fan. A sleek and advanced display shows the current fan mode and speed level. A dimming feature means you can adjust the unit to 5 different levels if you’re a light sleeper like I am.

Honeywell Quietset tower fan controls image

The auto-off timer allows choosing 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours of operation time before it turns off automatically. It’s a great way to let the fan run and then shutoff to avoid using up energy when you’re not around.

The easy-touch electronic controls add a distinct touch of class to a surprisingly affordable fan – well below the price of many competitors that don’t offer the same nice fan display.

Need to move it to another spot in your dorm room? Not a problem! There’s a built-in carrying handle on the top rear as well.

Honeywell QuietSet tower fan at night in bedroom quiet sleep

One of the QuietSet fan’s best features is the low-noise operation. You are assured of a cool and quiet night time. Don’t worry about bright lights, either. Thanks to the illumination dimmer feature you can adjust control panel lighting to your preference.

If you’re looking a great fan and an excellent value, look no further. It’s a great looking, great-performing fan that cools well and is really quiet. I’m a big fan of the QuietSet and find it to be a treat to use.

Although it would be nice to have more features on the remote control, that’s a minor complaint, given how much you get and how well it performs.

Assembly is easy, too, so there’s no need to worry about having to spend much time getting it up and running. Just like with other Honeywell products, instructions are clear and well-written. There are only a few pieces you need to assemble once it’s out of the box.

PROS:
  • Available in black and white colors
  • Touch button controls
  • Sound/speed level display
  • Dimmer control with 5 levels (inc. off)
  • Very quiet operation
  • Oscillation feature
  • 1-8 hour auto-off timer
  • Remote control w/ storage on rear
  • Good cooling ability and airflow
  • Great for bedrooms and night time
  • 8 fan speed levels
  • Simple assembly
  • Great buyer reviews
CONS:
  • The remote control is limited to 3 functions
  • No half-hour choice on timer (1, 2, 4, 8 only)
  • No woodgrain trim like Lasko Wind Curve offers

Ultimately, the Honeywell QuietSet is a great value and one of the best tower fans you’ll find below $70 or so. I’m honestly impressed with the performance, build quality, and so much more.

Get a good price for an excellent fan with plenty of features! Find out today why it has some of the best buyer reviews you'll find over at Amazon.

3. Lasko Air Stik Ultra Slim Tabletop – A lower-priced tower fan that’s great for desks and tabletops in dorm rooms!

Lasko Air Stick featured image blackGot a college budget and can’t spend a lot, but you still need a compact way to feel cooler? The good news is that Lasko has you covered.

The Lasko Air Stik Ultra Slim tabletop fan is perfect for small spaces just like your college dorm room.

You’ll find it just as well-made and dependable as Lasko’s many other popular cooling fans. At about 14″ (35.6 cm) in height, it’s big enough to give you the comfort of good air flow and yet small enough to not eat up precious space.

Priced at well below $50, you might think you’ll be compromising on quality…but you won’t be at all.

The Air Stick Ultra Slim is available in 3 great colors:

  • Black
  • Silver
  • White

It’s a great match for a desk or table in your dorm.

Featuring backlit electronic controls, it’s easy to use in the dark or during daylight as well. Choose from 2 quiet fan speed settings that are perfect for you or you and your roommate. Keep it anywhere you have a few inches of free space.

Keep it right on your study desk if you like!

Lasko Air Stick desktop office use example

It fits in nearly anywhere you need it to! A great choice for dorm rooms, the Lasko Air Stik offers simplicity and compact size without costing a lot.

Sleek and compact, the Air Stick works great just about anywhere.

Despite its small size, it features an oscillation function just like bigger models to offer a nice 60 degrees width of comforting airflow. The design distributes the soothing air much more effectively than its fixed position competitors can.

The patented blue safety plug is Lasko’s own safety design. Built into the electrical power plug, a safety mechanism will shut off power to the fan should an electrical overload or other unsafe conditions trigger it.

As great as it is, there are a few compromises to live with for the price. There’s no remote control available and no auto-off timer feature either.

However, at this price range, you’re still getting a great fan that performs well and is well-made, too.

PROS:
  • Low price
  • Easy to use – simple controls
  • Backlit buttons
  • Electronic controls
  • 2 fan speeds
  • Quiet operation
  • Well-made and good quality
  • 3 colors available
  • Compact size (14″ tall)
  • Oscillation feature
  • Fused safety plug
  • Good buyer reviews
CONS:
  • No remote available
  • No auto-off timer
  • Not as quiet as more expensive models
  • No ionizer/air cleaning feature

When it comes to compact fans you can fit in limited space (especially dorm rooms) there are lots of choices out there. However, the Air Stik is just a better choice all around. Many happy buyer reviews back up my opinion as well.

Don’t hesitate to check it out! You can find out why so many people love it and see the current low price at Amazon.

4. Holmes 32″ oscillating tower fan – Affordable performance, great quality, and easy to use

Holmes 32 inch HT38R-U tower fan featured image

If you’re not already familiar with Holmes line of home air quality products you’re missing out. I’ve test several and I’ve been happy with what I’ve found. The produce some very nice – and affordable – products you should definitely consider.

The wonderful Holmes HT38R-U tower fan is no different and is definitely one of the better choices for under $65 or so.

It’s one of the easiest-to-use tower fans I’ve found anywhere. You’re not skimping on quality, value, or cooling ability, however! It’s a great compromise between all 3.

At about 32″ (82.3 cm) in size, with the lovely satin black and silver finish accents it is honestly one of the best-looking fans I’ve tested.

A solid and wide base measuring 11″ (23 cm) in diameter adds a stable, supportive way to keep it upright and still save on valuable floor space.

Holmes HT38R-U controls example image

The Holmes HT38R-U features a classy yet simple control panel with clearly marked electronic controls. Just push a button to rotate through 3 fan speeds. Likewise, push the other buttons to start the oscillation feature, set the auto-off timer, or switch power on or off. Internal lights show the current mode at a glance. It’s a very modern and sharp-looking tower fan you’ll enjoy owning.

Even better, you’ll still get some of the same features found on more expensive competitor models. For example, there’s an auto-off timer provided with 1, 2, 4, or 8 hour options to choose from.

Simply push the timer selection button and it will begin an hourly countdown for automatic shutoff while you’re asleep or busy with work or class.

The oscillation feature provides almost 180 degrees of wide airflow to fill the room with soothing and pleasant cooling. Turn it on the fan will gently (and quietly) move from side to side unattended.

Homes HT38R-U remote control imageAlthough it’s affordable, the HT38R-U also includes a convenient remote control. With the remote you can control the major functions including fan speed, on/off, oscillation, and the timer.

The included remote control works well and is easy to get used to, as it’s very similar to a car remote. It feels good in the hand and isn’t bulky or hard to deal with. I also love how great it is to not have to get up from what I’m doing to change settings!

To round things off, you’ll also appreciate the nice little carrying handle built into the body as well. It’s easy to move around and place it where you need it the most.

PROS:
  • 3-speed fan operation
  • Black and white model choices
  • Electronic push button controls
  • Mode indicator lights
  • Oscillation feature
  • Remote control included
  • Remote operates most functions
  • Quiet operation
  • Reliable
  • Good price
  • Carry handle
  • Simple operation
  • Good buyer reviews
  • 8 hour (max) auto shutoff timer
CONS:
  • Limited to 1, 2, 4, and 8 hour shutoff settings
  • More fan speeds would be better (like the Lasko Wind Curve)
  • No ionizer/air cleaning feature
  • No dimmer functionality

There’s no need to spend a lot to get a great fan and keep cool in your dorm room. The Holmes HT38R-U really is a smart choice for those who want a lot without paying too much.

Don’t just believe my opinion, however – check out the thousands of happy buyers who love it as well. You can’t go wrong!

Have a look today at this great tower fan that many people report really enjoy using.

5. Pelonis 36″ FZ10-17JR – Elegant design and feature-packed. Keep your dorm room cool for under $75.

Pelonis FZ10-17JR tower fan imageYou might not have heard of Pelonis, but it’s time to learn more.

While you may find many other tower fans to choose from, the Pelonis FZ10-17JR oscillating fan is a hidden gem worth checking out. Sleek, elegant, and sophisticated-looking, it’s a nice change from budget competitors out there.

Front-facing illuminated indicators show the operation status and dim automatically after 30 seconds to avoid disturbing you in a dark room at night.

There are 3 great modes of operation to choose from:

  • Normal
  • Natural
  • Sleep (minimal noise mode)

Pelonis FZ10-17JR remoteThe Pelonis tower fan includes a compact and handy remote that allows you to control most functions from across the room.

A compact and simple remote control is included, although the battery is not. The remote is easy to use and allows you to control essentially all the functions at your fingertips. The remote, while a bit basic unlike some competitors, works reliably.

It’s great to have those nights after you’ve had a full day of classes and don’t feel like having to fiddle with the settings.

Pelonis FZ10-17JR controls image

Controls are well laid-out and sensible with the top-facing push buttons provide good tactile feel and operation. I definitely don’t have any complaints here, as they’re responsive and work well. I’m happy with them (you can often tell a lot from how buttons feel, I’ve learned).

The oscillation function works well, moving with about 60 degrees of coverage width side to side. Combined with the 36″ (91 cm) of height, I found the Pelonis does well at providing pleasant airflow that won’t disturb you with noise.

Speaking of pleasant: the fan is indeed very quiet and one of the better ones for its price range that I’ve tried. The sleep mode offers a special low-noise level especially for night time use.

The 7 hour auto-off timer allows you to set the fan for automatic shutoff later. It’s a wonderful feature to have at bed time or when you’re doing other things.

Assembly is one of the easiest I’ve found – no screws required! It only takes a few minutes to get up and running, so there’s no need to worry about any inconvenience there.

Another feature I like is the power off memory function. At the next power up the fan starts right back where you left it last time. Very nice!

PROS:
  • User-friendly controls
  • 3-speed fan settings/modes
  • Auto-dimming indicator lights
  • Sleep (quiet) mode
  • Low-noise operation
  • Good cooling ability
  • Remote control included
  • Auto-off timer
  • Oscillation feature
  • Carrying handle
  • Good buyer reviews
  • Great looking appearance
  • Easy assembly (no screws)
CONS:
  • Remote works well but not as nice as others
  • Auto timer is limited to 7 hours max
  • Remote battery not included
  • Documentation could be better
  • Lacks other fan speeds
  • No digital level like Honeywell QuietSet fan

Although I do have a few tiny complaints (no battery for the remote, only 3 fan speeds/modes, no digital readout scale) I still can’t deny how much of great product it is overall. It’s a good value for the money and looks great.

If you’re looking for great cooling and quiet operation that’s not expensive, it’s well worth checking out.

Take my advice – go have a look at why so many people recommend it as well!

Tower fan basics to know

How do tower fans work?

Tower fans vs box fans diagram

In contrast to traditional box and other blade fan designs, tower fans have a unique and tall vertical shape. A cylindrical fan assembly rotates and blows air horizontally. While traditional fans work well in most cases, tower fans can distribute air more evenly and in some cases with less noise, too.

Tower fans are a unique design in that they’re cylindrical. That is, they have a tall and essentially round design much like a cylinder you may recall from your old geometry classes.

They’re while traditional fans like ceiling fans, box fans, and tabletop fans are very popular, tower fans offer some benefits that the others cannot.

Tower fans work by using a tall vertical fan assembly driven by a motor to blow air horizontally. Unlike traditional designs, they don’t use standard fan blades to cut through the air and create air pressure to cool your room.

Their blades are more of a curved design which appear as a circular pattern when viewed from a top-down perspective.

Tower fans vs box fans and ceiling fans

While both can cool a room, tower fans are actually easier to use than traditional products and offer several benefits over them:

  • A smaller base means they’re easier to find room for
  • Many models have more quiet operation than traditional designs
  • Easily portable
  • Can be placed near you for better cooling more easily
  • Many offer features like timers or remote control operation

Think of tower fans as more advanced fans that allow more benefits and features than the average fan does. Ultimately the biggest advantage of buying a tower fan is that they can cool a room better than other fans due to their better air coverage.

How do tower fans cool a room?

How tower fans cool a room diagram

Tower fans use forced convection to remove heat from objects in a room, including you. Convection the scientific term for the movement of fluids (including gases like air) which transfer heat…including removing it, thereby cooling you.

As I mentioned earlier, tower fans work using a cylindrical and vertical blower design. The result is a vertical stream of air blowing throughout a room that passes by objects including you.

Basically a fan moves air rapidly across your body and removes heat, causing you to feel cooler.

Fans cool a room using the principle of forced convection. That is, fans force air across people or objects and transfer heat away from them using the principle of convection. Convection is simply using liquids (including gases like air) to transfer heat.

For example, your computer’s CPU relies on a cooling fan which removes heat by drawing cooler air over it. This process draws cooler air over it and pushes out heat it drew away from the processor.

With enough fan speed and when using a well-designed product, tower fans circulate air in the room and help keep air moving for more comfort.

How tower fans help save money

Tower fan money saving badge imageUsing a tower fan has another great benefit – they’re much more energy-efficient than using an air conditioner unit.

Most air conditioners use quiet a bit of energy as they must power not only an electric fan but also an energy-hogging compressor used to circulate refrigerant and cool the air. Tower fans, however, can operate up to a whopping 60% more efficiently!

You can also combine the two for energy and money savings: by using a tower fan in a room where an air conditioner is already in use, you can turn up the air conditioner, reducing it usage. The fan will help distribute cool air in the room and will also aid in cooling by itself.

In other words, adding a tower fan can boost an air conditioner’s effectiveness while reducing power costs.

Features to look for when shopping

Tower fan remote control example

Many models offer some excellent features like a handy remote control. You won’t even have to get out of bed or leave your chair to change settings! For the money, tower fans offer some of the best features of any air product if you shop wisely.

Many products are available, but it’s wise to know a bit more about what to expect before shopping (and definitely check out my recommended product list!).

Some of the top features I’ve found are:

  • Remote control operation
  • Different colors & styling to better suit your room or home
  • Carrying handle
  • Auto-off timer
  • Electronic controls
  • Low-noise operation
  • Oscillation for enhanced room cooling
  • Air cleaning features

Additionally, you’ll want to be sure to buy those with good buyer feedback, as in my experience poorly designed air products are noisier and won’t come close to better-designed products. It’s simply not worth it to save just a few dollars, in my opinion.

Some of the best brands offer very quiet operation and are great for those who want to use the fan when sleeping.

Air cleaning features are generally those like an ionizer that uses electrical components to charge and trap some airborne particles in the air passing through it. Note, however, that they’re not a substitute for a good air purifier.

If you’d prefer an air cleaner that can also act as a fan, check out my review of the Honeywell AirGenius 5 here.

An auto-off timer is a feature that allow the device to turn itself after a pre-determined amount of time you choose. An oscillation feature means the fan will turn side to side slowly, blowing air through a very wide area in the room.

Lasko Wind Curve T42950 tower fan featured image
I’m not at all surprised it’s one of the top-selling tower fans of all time. The Lasko Wind Curve with fresh air ionizer has nearly anything you could ask for in a fan and looks great, too!

The company produces a range of some of the best-selling air products on the market.

Measuring a tall 42.5″ (108 cm) it’s available in three beautiful color & style options:

  1. Black with wood grain inset
  2. Matte silver and gray
  3. Gray with wood grain inset

It features great airflow performance when placed about 4 feet (1.2 m) from nearby walls and furniture. Use the optional oscillation feature to get great cooling coverage as it widely moves to fill the room with comforting air.

Lasko Wind Curve control panel

The Wind Curve features an easy-to-use control panel and LED indicator lights for operational modes and timer status. Controls are both simple and reliable. Just touch the fan button to change speeds or use the timer to set it and walk away. Don’t forget the oscillation button for great room cooling!

Want to set it and forget it? No problem! It even includes an auto-off timer you can use to select 1/2, 1, 2, or 4 hours of operation.

The optional ionizer feature helps reduce airborne contaminants in the room within circulating air.

  • Great color and style options
  • Good performance and airflow
  • Quiet 3-speed operation
  • Remote control (includes batteries)
  • Remote stores on rear of unit
  • Oscillation feature

  • Needs about 4 feet space from walls/furniture for optimal use

While I wish a few features were better (more selectable fan speeds and more timer settings would be nice) overall it’s fantastic choice. I recommend it to anyone wanting a reliable and affordable tower fan that can cool a room well.

It gets our Editor’s Choice award being one of the best all-around values. Having the convenience of a wonderful remote control is icing on the cake on an otherwise already excellent fan.

Take my advice and find out why it's a super popular choice with thousands of buyers at Amazon.

2. Honeywell QuietSet whole room tower fan – Advanced features and quiet cooling power you can afford

Honeywell Quietset HYF290B tower fan
I’m no stranger to Honeywell’s wonderful line of air cleaning products as I’ve reviewed many of their products. In testing, I found them to be some of the best. Likewise, the QuietSet 8-speed whole room tower fan doesn’t disappoint, either!

In it I’ve found many of the same great features that stand out from competitors and that you’ll absolutely love. The fan stands a tall 40″ (101.6 cm) in height and looks great in any room or office.

Honeywell QuietSet tower fan remote control image

A simple-to-use remote control is included for amazing convenience. You no longer have to walk across the room to touch the fan! Just click and you’re done. It stores conveniently in the rear when not in use.

A handy remote control is included as well. Although it doesn’t allow more advanced operation like a Lasko Wind Curve model, it’s a great way to use the fan hassle-free. No need to get up!

You can turn it on, off, switch oscillation on/off, or change fan speeds from across the room.

Controls are some of the best I’ve seen any product – especially a fan. Check out the image below. A sharp-looking and advanced display shows the selected fan speed/sound level. A dimming feature provides not one but 5 night-time lighting selections.

Honeywell Quietset tower fan controls image
Additionally, the 1-8 hour selectable automatic shut-off timer option lets the fan run unattended then turn off later when you’re asleep or at work.

Easy-touch controls add a real touch of class to a surprisingly affordable fan – well below the cost of many competing products.

Need to move it around the room for better cooling? It’s a snap as there’s a built-in carrying handle on the rear, too.

Honeywell QuietSet tower fan at night in bedroom quiet sleep

The QuietSet tower fan works great at night when you’re resting comfortably. Thanks to the multi-level dimmer option and extremely low operational noise, you will be assured of cool and peaceful sleep at night. It’s time to consider getting a fan that will really help you sleep better!

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better value anywhere that works so well to cool a room with minimal noise levels.

While it could use more controls on the included remote, it’s one of the best tower fans I’ve come across anywhere and I’m sure you’ll love it. If you’re concerned about assembly, don’t be.

There are only a few pieces to assemble and directions are clear and easy to follow.

PROS:
  • Available in black and white colors
  • Touch button controls
  • Sound/speed level display
  • Dimmer control with 5 levels (inc. off)

Lasko Air Stick featured image black
On a tighter budget and limited on space but still want to feel cooler and more comfortable? The great news is that I’ve got the perfect fan just for you. The Lasko Air Stik Ultra Slim may be exactly what you need.

As the Lasko brand name is responsible for many of today’s best-selling fan products, you’ll find it just as well-made reliable. Measuring 14″ (35.6 cm) in height, it’s a great choice for places where space is limited.

Being priced well below $50, you might think it’s short on quality…but it isn’t at all.

The Air Stick Ultra Slim tabletop fan is available in 3 great colors:

  • Black
  • Silver
  • White

It’s a great match for any home or office.

The Air Stick features backlit electronic controls which means it’s easy to use during the day or night. Select from 2 quiet and refreshing fan speeds perfect for any cubicle, office, or small room. Keep it right on your desk if you like!

Use it nearly anywhere! It’s right home in your bedroom, dorm room, cubicle, or even right on your desk! Simplicity and compact size make it a great buy.

The sleek and compact design makes it blend in well in nearly any environment.

And guess what…there’s an oscillation feature built-in as well, just like larger and more expensive models. Providing a nice 60 degrees or so of fan coverage, it efficiently distributes the cooling air flow much more effectively than fixed fans can.

A patented “blue safety plug” includes internal fusing in case of an electrical overload and will shut off electricity to prevent unsafe conditions.

It’s not perfect (there’s no auto-off timer or remote control available for example) but one of the best buys in its class.

PROS:
  • Low price
  • Easy to use – simple controls
  • Backlit buttons
  • Electronic controls
  • 2 fan speeds

Holmes 32 inch HT38R-U tower fan featured imageAre you familiar with Holmes home air products? If not, you’re definitely missing out. I’ve tested several Holmes product and so far I’ve been happy with them. They’re well-known for producing a number of great air quality products that help keep your costs down.

The fan also has an optional oscillation function for 60 degrees of cooling coverage. Combined with the 36″ (91 cm) of height, you’ll get great room cooling that won’t disturb you.

Fan operation is very quiet (one of the more pleasant ones I’ve tested) and works well.

Additionally, a 7 hour programmable timer allows you to set the fan and have it turn off automatically when you like. A great feature to have at bed time or when you’ll be busy doing other tasks.

  • Auto timer is limited to 7 hours max
  • Remote battery not included
  • Documentation could be better

While I have a few minor complaints (no battery for the remote, limited fan speeds, and no digital level readout) it’s still a great one, and I really like it. For the money, it’s a good value.

For an affordable, easy-to-use tower fan that looks great and cools a room very well, the Pelonis FZ10-17JR really is a nice buy.

Have a look at the great reviews and comments from many happy buyers.
